If you want exceptional photos, manual controls, point and shoot controls and have the ability to get the shots you want when you want… this is the camera for you. I do mostly nature photography and I have gotten some amazing photos with this camera and have to say this is the best camera I have used to date…. and the 35x zoom is unbelievable. Now I must say that I am a amateur/pro and photography to me is all in the eyes behind the camera. Many of my shots have been use in newspapers and have gotten great acclaim. I would not hesitate one bit in recommending this camera to anyone even professionals as a back up or main camera.
This camera appears very similar to the Kodak Z990, which the author forgot to mention. It, as well as the P500, has a 12.1MP CMOS sensor, plus the same 840mm telephoto lens as the SX40 HS. This camera has an advantage over the Z990 as its telephoto range starts with 24mm; Kodak’s is 28mm. The SX40 has slightly better color than the Z990, but the Z990 takes the prize in video and audio recording. Canon’s model has an older mono mic, while Kodak’s has a stereo mic. For prices, the Z990 is the winner at only $300 retail price, now available for $250 or less. All in all, if you’re thinking about buying the SX40, you might want to check out the Z990 instead.
