I have had Sony DSLR’s from the A100 to the A700 and now the A900, a lot of likes between the models so once out of the box, the 900 seems like an old friend. Took off to Moab Utah, my favorite haunt, for a week, again left the tripod at home but have a monopod with me. Plugged in a older Minolta 28-135 f:4-4.5 with a CPL and WOW o WOW…. This camera shoots like none other, sure it is a bit on the heavy side but it is ok to get a muscle here and there… She just feels rock steady in my hands, much easier to hold and everything is where it should be. I mostly shot at ISO 400 as this is a “friendly” speed I am used to and the results were just outstanding, you cannot believe the depth of the image she produces, full and rich colors, the steady shot was better than the 700 and only had one pic that was a throw away from my shake, and the wind was way bad last week. Noise, just hold her to 800 or less and you have to “peep” very hard to see any. Sharpness, do NOT buy a cheapo lens and expect her to perform to your expectations, just buy good glass and you will do just fine till the “G” comes along. Intuitive, with the “F” button you can change settings in a breeze. Custom Settings 1,2, and 3 are what we always wished for on a top twisty knob… One thing I will mention that I really like about this Full Framer is I tend to revert back to my 35mm film days and limited frames on a pack of film, I was “thrifty” with the trigger and produced more “quality” shots per canister. Now with a 8GB very fast card I tend to do the same, composing the shot better, checking the edges, checking the exposure, deleting more and enjoying it more, not just shooting because there is plenty of space on the disc and I can delete later on the computer, really enjoying what is around me….
I could go on forever, no, she is not perfect but what is, there is always going to be room for improvement with new technology and wise minds….Thanks Sony, a great effort you can be proud of,,,,, makes me smile, yup, something like GREAT!!….
