Today on DT Daily: An auction for an early Apple computer rings up a gigantic final bid, New Zealand Airline’s epic safety video, and we get an unexpected peek at Avengers: Age of Ultron.
Got a million dollars burning a hole in your pocket? Just think, you could’ve bought a whole computer that doesn’t connect to the internet, do word processing or play YouTube videos. So what makes it worth almost a million dollars?
It’s an original Apple One computer from 1976 of course. Built by the legendary Steve Wozniak in Steve Job’s Palo Alto garage, the Apple-1 just sold at auction for the incredible price of $905,000 – a bit of a premium over its original price tag of $666.66. Why is it so valuable? It’s estimated only about 60 of the original 200 or so Apple 1 computers still exist, and this one is one of the very, very few that still actually works, as you can see in a video from auction house Bonhams.
So did some Internet billionaire or a Saudi prince snap it up? Nope. The winning bidder was the Ford Foundation, and they’ll be putting it in their Ford museum honoring American innovators.
Admit it, when the flight attendants launch into their mandatory safety spiel at the start of your flight, you probably reach for your book, earbuds or a copy of SkyMall. Well, if you fly Air New Zealand, we doubt that’s going to happen.
Why? Because their safety video is epic. Truly epic. Riffing on the Lord of the Rings and Hobbit movie themes – all of which were shot in New Zealand – the hilarious video features Rings and Hobbit icons Elijah Wood, director Peter Jackson and other cast members, as well as some actual flight attendants. There’s eagle riding, bungee jumping, even the Orcs are in on the fun. The video is part of the run-up to the final Hobbit series entry, The Battle of the Five Armies.
But in this fun episode, everyone is getting along just fine. The movie opens December 17.
Speaking of movies, Disney was supposed to give us our first glimpse of the next Avengers movie, Age of Ultron, next week during an Agents of SHIELD episode. Oops. Somehow, the trailer got leaked and instead of trying to pull it back, Disney just rolled with it – and blamed Hydra, of course.
Age of Ultron comes out next year and features the cadre of Marvel action heroes battling an A.I.-driven robot that looks like a pumped-up version of Tony Stark’s Iron Man, because… that’s pretty much what he is. In fact, the story revolves around Stark’s quest for peace with Ultron, which predictably backfires. All the familiar faces return, along with a few new ones, and Ultron is played by James Spader – which may seem like an odd casting choice, but the movie looks great.
Avengers: Age of Ultron comes out May first – unless Disney decides to leak it to theaters before then.
