Don’t wait for Cyber Monday: these Amazon August Smart Lock deals will be gone

Black Friday is here, and the deals on smart home devices are getting hot. One deal we’ve uncovered is on August’s Smart Locks, with both the standard and Pro versions discounted by 47%. But act quickly — as these deals are only good until 11:59 p.m. Pacific Time on Sunday.

Usually $150, Amazon is selling the August Smart Lock for just $79, while the Smart Lock Pro, usually $280, is marked down to only $149. These prices are both the lowest we’ve seen all year for either device by at least $10, and we don’t expect them to be this cheap again before Christmas.

Which one should you choose? Out of the box, the Smart Lock has a fairly basic feature set. You’ll only be able to lock and unlock your door with your smartphone, and it can’t connect to other smart home platforms or unlock remotely.

Those features require the purchase of an August Connect Wi-Fi Bridge, a $62 optional accessory that allows your Smart Lock to connect to other smart home devices via your Wi-Fi network. While purchasing these two products separately saves you about $8, there are other features that you still won’t have.

Only the Smart Lock Pro is compatible with Apple’s HomeKit and Z-Wave, the latter allowing you to connect your lock to your broader smart home system outside of the August platform. While the lack of these features won’t be a dealbreaker for many, keep that in mind before you try to save yourself a bit of money — especially those with iPhones and other Apple devices.

Either way, both locks are solid buys. The Smart Lock Pro sports an overall smaller footprint and might work better depending on where your lock bolt is located on your door. However, if you just want smart lock functionality without all the bells and whistles, the Smart Lock is absolutely a solid choice.

This deal is by no means the only smart home deal out there this Black Friday. You can find our continuously updated list of the best buys here, and we recently posted about another smart lock deal on Amazon from August’s competitor Yale.

7 things you didn’t know a smart lock could do
August Wi-Fi lock being installed

Innovative, easy to install (in most cases), and engineered for your peace of mind, smart locks have quickly become a major staple in the world of residential home security. While some smart lock features, such as on-the-go monitoring and remote locking/unlocking are standard functions that most consumers will expect from their new gear, box-art and brand website specs are merely the surface level. Putting things another way: Smart locks are capable of so much more.

Whether you own a smart lock of your own (or several), are considering purchasing one, or want to learn more about them, we've put together this guide to aim the spotlight on some of the lesser-known powers of today's leading smart locks. The rusted cylinders and deadbolts on our front doors have never looked so pitiful.

Amazon’s Echo command center is yet another display, and I don’t need it at home
Amazon Echo Show 10 on a nightstand.

Even though they’re not quite as ubiquitous in homes compared to smart speakers, the continuing affordability of smart displays make them valuable assets with far more functionality. If the report about Amazon developing a wall-mounted Echo Show is true, it certainly points to the increasing trend of smart displays being used focal hubs in the smart home. While the prospect of this smart display has its merits, I’m not convinced that it’s something you need -- more so, it would be yet another display to crowd your home.

As I’m typing this, the Lenovo Smart Display 8 is in arm’s reach on my desk. It’s a perfect deskside companion with many uses, including controlling the smart lights throughout my apartment, allowing me to quickly glance at notifications about upcoming appointments, and providing a distraction as a secondary screen playing YouTube videos. There’s no logical reason for me to add yet another display to my setup, especially one that would involve being wall-mounted.

Smart toothbrushes are expensive. Quip’s model is proof why you don’t need them
you dont need spend fortune smart toothbrush quip brush

Brushing your teeth is a deeply ingrained part of the daily routine for most people. You wake up, stretch, get out of bed, and brush your teeth. It’s the first thing you do in the morning and the last thing you do at night. When something is as ubiquitous as that, can a smart toothbrush really make much more of a difference than a normal toothbrush?

Well, yes and no. A smart toothbrush can certainly enhance the brushing experience and give you a deeper, more dentist-like cleaning, but you don’t need to spend a fortune on one. As time goes on and smart toothbrushes become more advanced and complex, their price goes up. I spent some time using Quip's new Smart Brush, and it has forever changed my mind. Here’s why you don’t need to break the bank on a smart toothbrush.
Still a better clean than manual brushing
There's no denying the effectiveness of electric toothbrushes when it comes to getting rid of plaque -- they're better than manual brushes. Period. Two of the more popular brands on the market, Oral-B and Sonicare, have shown consumers the advantages of toothbrushes that leverage vibrating brush heads -- and Quip's interpretation is no different. Actually, Quip has been a name in the electric toothbrush scene for a while, but the recent launch of its smart toothbrush shows big improvements to the design.
