Konami gave MercurySteam the wheel for the Castlevania franchise and the developer has taken it. They have two Castlevania: Lords of Shadow games coming out in 2012 alone; one is a console version for the Xbox and PlayStation systems. The other is for the Nintendo 3Ds handheld system and comes with a mouthful of a title in Castlevania: Lords of Shadow – Mirror of Fate, which we’ll simply refer to it as MoF from now on.
MoF is set 25 years after the end of Castlevania: Lords of Shadow, a game in which Gabriel Belmont became a vampire. It acts as precursor to the sequel, Castlevania: Lords of Shadows 2, which follows Gabriel in his vampiric form. MoF, however, details the fate of Gabriel’s sons, Simon and Trevor Belmont. Trevor, now a knight of the Brotherhood of Light, sets out to avenge his mother’s murder at the hands of his father. Gabriel has essentially become Dracula and has declared war on the Brotherhood, further setting up a showdown between father and son.
MoF will be the first Castlevania game to use stereographic 3D. MercurySteam says that the perspective will be in 3D but the movement will be 2D for the most part. Currently, MoF does not have a release date beyond “2012” but you can expect to see it out before Lords of Shadow 2 drops in the fall.
