I was thinking about either getting the Kindle or the Nook for school. I heard that in the Nook you can highlight things that you have read but can the Kindle do that as well?

i just got a nook yesterday and no troubles yet. one gripe would be when there is a vertical scroll bar in the touch pad area, a light touch and swipe up and down to move the scroll bar often results in it thinking i'm selecting something. they should fix that.

I just got a Wi-Fi Nook (with software 1.4) as of Aug 2, 2010
I guess I like it now, but my first reaction was very negative.
I found the keyboard very difficult to use (I have large - i.e. mansized hands)
The display is nice & crisp, so I thought I was in hog heaven
until I tried to download my favorite books. No luck at all on the first
3 books I tried. My best success was using my computer (Mac) to
find ebooks on the web, download them, traslate them to epub or PDF & then transfer
them via USB. The Nook acts like a thumb drive (quite nifty).
So, the Wi-Fi interface is useless as far as I'm concerned
since B&N don't have the books I like (1960-70 Sci-Fi)
I couldn't even find Sharon Lee & steve Miller my favorite author duo,
Luckily Baen comes to the rescue.
I also found Roger Zelazny's Roadmarks on line
I'll look for Fred Hoyle's Black Cloud later.
None of the above were available from B&N.
I did find Hal Clement's Mission of gravity
and a new novel by Peter Mayle, so all is not lost.

Just google for:
ebook title

and all my nice stuff shows up (just not at B&N).

I have a question. For people who already have the nook or the kindle. My birthday is coming up and I cant decide if I want the Kindle or the Nook. I read the reviews and people are saying so many different things and Im afraid that Ill get the nook and then regret getting it if something bad happens to it. But it seems so much cooler than the kindle. I really want one or the other, but i want the best one. Which one do you think i should get?

I own a Nook, is ther ea way to download ebooks from other sources than Barnes and Noble into the Nook. I am particularly interested in foreign books (Mostly French) that Barnes and Noble does not seem to carry, and I could buy in PDF or other formats.

Any chance you give this a second look, I'm starting to see other reviewers such as Cnet give this another review since the three firmware updates have been issued. The last one being in late April, make it v.1.3.

I must say that these updates have really polished up my Nook. I loved it before but love even more. Page turning is snappier and the new web browser allows for more wi fi connection.

We've been taking full advantage of the "Read In-Store" feature along with all the ohte "More in Store"

My wife has the Kindle 2 and myself the Nook, and she is now selling her's on Ebay. This is really really a nice and fun e-reader.
I highly recommend it.

I am living overseas and will be in the U.S. soon and want to get an ereader. However, am uncertain as to whether to get a Nook or a KIndle. I am a B&N fan so would like to patronize them if it is reasonable to do so. I do get to the U.S. about every 6 months or so so could load up if necessary but often hear about a book that I would like to read and would love to have access to it whereever I am. Is there a way to purchase books for a Nook when one is out of the country? Also, can you access the library when you are out of the country? I am a basic illiterate when it comes to technology so I want something that is easy to use. What do you recommend?

You are right about DRM and Calibre. I should have mentioned that Calibre does not open books protected by Digital Rights Management. It's great for the unprotected books, however. At least, when Calibre encounters DRM, it lets you know with a message to that effect, rather than just crashing or giving an error.

I have, use and love calibre too, and i HIGHLY recommend it! It's a 3 in 1 library database/conversion utility/download utility, and it even has server capability so you can access your library from anywhere you may be! Be aware, however, that calibre WILL NOT open or convert ANY DRM books! If you get a book from Amazon, chances are high that it is DRM'ed and CANNOT be opened or converted for the nook by calibre!

There's another very nice site for free eBooks: <a href="<a rel="nofollow" href="http://www.feedbooks.com"">http://www.feedbooks.com" rel="nofollow">http://www.feedbooks.com . Feedbooks not only has classics whose copyrights have expired, but also new books that were contributed by modern authors for free distribution. I suppose this is a way for unknown aspiring authors to get their works published so they can make a name for themselves and break into the industry that way, much like musicians release a few tracks for free playing as a way to publicize their work.

Nook owners -- be careful to buy the right kind of microSD chip if you want to extend the storage capacity of your Nook. I made the mistake of buying a microSD HC (high-capacity) 4 GB chip. The Nook clearly shows the memory slot as "microSD" not the HC version, so it was my oversight, not B&N's fault. When the chip was installed, the Nook only saw it as a few hundred megabytes, not 4 GB. That's when I realized my error. Be sure to buy the regular microSD, not the high-capacity type. The second time around, I got a 2 GB microSD for about $15 at my local office supply store. The Kodak brand has a lifetime guarantee.

The Nook clearly shows the memory slot as “microSD” not the HC version, so it was my oversight, not B&N's fault.

I have found a very nice program that runs on your Windows, Mac, or Linux computer, which extends the capability of your eBook reader, whether it is a Nook, Kindle, Sony, or others. The program is called Calibre. It's free. Download at <a href="<a rel="nofollow" href="http://www.calibre-ebook.com"">http://www.calibre-ebook.com" rel="nofollow">http://www.calibre-ebook.com. Calibre lets you download ebooks from any site, read them on your computer, send them to your ebook reader, convert them to different ebook formats (for example, Kindle format to Nook format or ePUB format), find pretty covers automatically from web searches to have a cover image for your public domain books, download news feeds, etc. I'm just starting to use it, so I've barely scratched the surface of its features. Try it yourself.

Not sure how it works but I can borrow ebooks from my library, download it from my computer and then load it on my Nook. For some reason, you can't open the ebook when the due date is up. Check your public library if you have ebooks available. You can also download audiobooks from the library and load it onto your nook since it supports mp3.

Pretty cool, I think.

Nook has more freedom in terms of content while Amazon wants everything to go through them first.

Come on, you can borrow free ebooks from the library as I have done! Beat that, Amazon!

The book lending is a nice feature, but it only works once on any particular book and only if the publisher authorized lending of that book. Regarding Google books and Project Gutenberg books -- the US copyright act is somewhat complicated on its cutoff dates, but I know that books published prior to 1923 are now in public domain because their copyright has expired. Books published in the US from 1923 to 1963 had the opportunity to extend the copyright for 95 years from date first published, but most did not do that, so the non-extended books are also in public domain. These are the ones that the free eBook repositories like <a href="<a rel="nofollow" href="http://books.google.com"">http://books.google.com" rel="nofollow">books.google.com and <a href="<a rel="nofollow" href="http://gutenberg.org"">http://gutenberg.org" rel="nofollow">gutenberg.org contain.

I'm wondering how this eBook thing will play out. When you buy a hardcopy book, you can give it away, sell it, lend it, as many times as you like. Can you sell or give away an eBook, that is, convey your license to possess the copy and display it on your reading device, to someone else? Can a public library lend its members a single copy of an eBook that it owns, just as it can lend a hardcopy book, and get it back when it is due? How can that be enforced, since the eBook is just a file on someone's device? How do the digital rights management systems handle this? Anyone know?

Nook displays pdf files, but poorly. For example, a 2-column journal article page is too small to read in the "small" font size but does show the whole page with its illustrations. To read the article, you can switch to a larger font, but the Nook reformats the lines by wrapping them rather than by zooming and creating a horizontal scroll bar. The result is chaotic and hard to read. Moreover, the manual says that you can't view pdf in landscape mode because the software only rotates the illustrations and not the text. Is that nuts or what? I'm hoping that future software updates will fix some of these feature problems. Maybe in the future more publishers will adopt the ePub format, which Nook does display well. I haven't tried landscape mode yet for ePub -- just tried the Nook yesterday for the first time. The user interface doesn't show any icon to push for rotation to landscape and back to portrait mode, nor does Nook have a sensor to determine its orientation automatically, so instead you have to go into a settings menu to change display mode -- not very convenient. But, I like Nook anyway and feel it has a lot of untapped potential if B&N listens to users and makes software updates frequently.

Since the nook uses Android as its OS, do you know if there is a SDK or capability to have user developed/downloaded apps specifically for the the nook and Android? For example, I might want to write an app to change the way the touch-screen works or provide a capability to display/support doc(x), ppt(x), and xls(x) documents.

Thanks for the review. Any thoughts on the iRex Technologies DR800SG?

There is no mechanism that forces you to getting books from B&N on the nook. You can download them from Google Books or Gutenberg for free and copy them to the Nook the same way you would with a flash drive.
