The Amazing Spider-Man will not be a reboot

So apparently the upcoming film, The Amazing Spider-Man, which features an entirely new cast, a new director, and a storyline that isn’t technically related to the previous Spider-Man films in any way, isn’t a reboot at all, but rather a side story. Even though the movie has its own title that isn’t Spider-Man 4, many of the characters from the original trilogy aren’t in the new movie and Spider-Man even wears a different suit. But it is not a reboot.

In an interview which will appear in a print edition of Entertainment Weekly, Avi Arad, the chief creative officer at Marvel Entertainment and the CEO of Marvel Studios, has claimed that the upcoming film won’t restart the franchise at all.

“It’s not a comeback.” Arad said. “You have to look at it this way: Do you want to know more about Spider-Man? This movie is going to tell stories that you didn’t see in movies 1, 2, and 3.”

While the idea of rebooting a franchise that has been inactive for less than four years wasn’t exactly the best received news ever, Arad seems to suggest that the film will operate within the confines of the three existing movies. That means we can all relax knowing that dancing emo Spidey and the horribly handled introduction of Venom are officially canon and cannot be remade. Great.

Arad also stated that the upcoming film “won’t erase what came before, but will try to weave a narrative that could take place within the framework of the earlier films.”

Arad’s statement directly contradicts earlier announcements from both Columbia and Marvel Studios, which have both officially listed the movie as a reboot of the franchise in press releases and formal statements. The film will also take place during Peter Parker’s high school years, which would be in contrast to the later films’ continuity that featured the new film’s villain, Dr. Curt Conners aka The Lizard, as a professor to Parker in college (played by Dylan Baker). It also doesn’t make sense in the original films’ mythology, which granted Spider-Man his web-shooters as a function of his anatomy—the new movie sticks to the comic book origins and features the devices as mechanical.

So while the news that it is not a reboot may come as a surprise to many, including perhaps the filmmakers, at least we can hold onto the image of Thomas Haden Church as the kindly bank robber who just happened to stumble into an insanely dangerous experiment in the middle of New York City that atomized him and gave him near god-like powers. Hooray. The Amazing Spider-Man is due in theaters in 3D on July 3, 2012.

Why you should watch The Amazing Spider-Man 2 on Netflix
Andrew Garfield in "The Amazing Spider-Man 2."

This month, Netflix has welcomed The Amazing Spider-Man 2 back to its lineup, and it has quickly become one of the most popular movies on Netflix. That makes this the perfect opportunity to tell you why you should watch The Amazing Spider-Man 2 on Netflix.

Now, we would never argue that The Amazing Spider-Man 2 is the best Spider-Man film or even a great one. It's got a lot of problems, including a truly grotesque Green Goblin design, a very unconvincing performance by Dane DeHaan as Harry Osborn, and a take on Electro (Jamie Foxx) that feels like it was lifted directly from Batman Forever. This film also tries so hard to set up an MCU-style Spider-Man universe that it wildly underperformed at the box office and led Sony Pictures to partner directly with Marvel Studios for the Tom Holland-led Spider-Man flicks.

Who is the best Spider-Man actor? All the Spider-Men, ranked
Blended image showing Tom Holland, Jake Johnson, and Andrew Garfield as Spider-Man against the background of a red and black spider's web.

Spider-Man is arguably the most popular and beloved superhero in modern pop culture. A staple in movies and television since the 1960s, Spidey is Marvel's crowning jewel, a near-universally adored hero that appeals to children and adults alike. Few superheroes have as much staying power as Spidey, cementing his place as a timeless icon and a staple of modern pop culture.

The web crawler has a rich and long history in movies and television. Since transitioning from the page to the screen in the Silver Age, Spider-Man has starred in countless animated series, received multiple live-action movies, and appeared as a major supporting figure in many other projects. But who, out of all the actors who have played him, is the best Spider-Man? It's not an easy decision - every actor has brought something unique and valuable to the table. However, some are undeniably better than others, and a few have become synonymous with the character. To begin, we will focus only on the character of Peter Parker, as he has the most depictions in movies and television.

20 years ago, Spider-Man swung onto MTV and changed the Marvel superhero forever
Sonar-like rings emanate from Spider-Man indicating his spidey-sense tingling.

Spider-Man: The New Animated Series Sony/MTV / Sony/MTV

Spider-Man: Across the Spider-Verse has to be the most freeze-frameable movie of the year. The hit sequel is packed with Easter eggs and left-field references — especially in its second half when the plot is invaded by a whole army of alternate-universe web slingers pulled from back issues and past adaptations alike. But if the roll calls of eagle-eyed fans are to be believed (Google "all the characters in Spider-Verse" for a comprehensive count), there's at least one Spider-Man missing from the film's sprawling game of Where's Waldo? He's the one who swung onto MTV 20 years ago this summer, delivering wisecracks in the voice of Neil Patrick Harris while soaring across a blocky computer-generated Manhattan.
