Sony’s new online service connecting the whole range of its gadgets to downloadable content like movies and games should help build brand loyalty, a top executive said Friday.
Executive Vice President Kazuo Hirai said the service, set for launch next year, highlights an advantage that Sony has over rivals like Samsung Electronics Co. and other manufacturers that don’t produce their own content. Sony’s business empire spans gaming, electronics, movies and music.

It’s not just Google showing off its Chrome today, Incase’s popular iPhone cases are now available in new metallic colors. The Chrome Slider Case is available in four shiny shades: Black, silver, gold and copper. The Chrome Slider Cases are compatible with the iPhone 3G (8GB & 16GB) and iPhone 3GS (16GB & 32GB). Incase says these new cases are durable, lightweight and allows users direct access to all device features. As I travel with my Kindle DX, I’m getting a lot of comments from folks planning to buy a Kindle for Christmas for their spouse or parent. Given that there are actually three competing products from major players in the market and two sizes of Kindle (along with a number of niche products that I’d stay away from as gifts because they are too specialized), I thought it would be good to use some of my experience to suggest a path so that you don’t get a product that sits on the shelf. I say this because the Kindle is my fifth e-book reader and the first four ended up on a shelf unused, with the Sony being my biggest disappointment. You may also want to consider some accessories that can enhance the Kindle experience, if you decide to go that route.
The convenient iPod/iPhone travel charger from Incase just got an upgrade. The new Incase Combo Charger has dual USB ports and a 12V input for your car. The Combo Charger also features hideaway flip-out wall socket prongs. Incase says this lightweight charger is compatible with the iPhone (3G & 3GS), iPod Nano (4th & 5th generations), iPod Touch (2nd generation), and most forms of the iPod classic. The multitasking charger is priced at $39.95.

Sony Corp. says some customers who pre-order its newest e-reader may not get the gadget in time for the holidays.
The company said Wednesday it’s trying to ship the $399 Reader Daily Edition for the holidays. But because interest has exceeded expectations, the company can’t be sure that everyone who buys one will get it by Christmas.
In the latest salvo in the escalating eBook wars, Barnes & Noble recently announced it was standardizing on the open ePub and PDF formats, embedded with “social” digital rights management (DRM) content protection.
With this move, B&N is embracing the cross-platform Adobe solution accepted by nearly 100 providers, including Sony (announced in August it plans to convert its eBooks to the ePub format by the end of 2009).
However, that group does not include market-leader Amazon, which debuted its popular Kindle 2 in early 2009. Kindle 2 eBooks are available in Amazon’s proprietary AZW format, as well as support for PDF, HTML, DOC, JPEG, GIF, PNG, BMP through conversion.
Amazon.com has announced it is now offering its Kindle Reader in Canada, just in time for the holiday buying season. Amazon launched a globally-capable version of its Kindle reader last month, but Canada was noticeably absent from the list of countries included in the launch. Industry speculation had Amazon trying to work out a deal with a Canadian mobile operator to support the Kindle’s wireless service…and while Amazon hasn’t named its carrier partner, but Canadian customers can now order the Kindle for $259 USD with immediate shipping from the Amazon Web site.
