Aeon Digital Announces IPTV DRV and Service
Aeon Digital announces the DV-280 Digital Video Recorder, promising video recording, rentals, music, and more via their Aeon Digital Network and your broadband connection.
Today at the 2005 World Broadband Forum in Yokohama, Japan, Aeon Digital announced the DV-280 digital video recorder, which promises to bring the digital video recording to IPTV (television-via-Internet) via Aeon’s own Aeon Digital Network and users’ existing broadband Internet connections. Customers connect the DV-280 to their television and their broadband Internet connection to stream or download media via the Internet or from Windows PCs on their local network. Aeon Digital says the DV-280 DVR will be available in retail stores in September 2005 with an estimated retail price of $299 under undisclosed OEM brand names.
The DV-280 downloads audio and video content via the Aeon Digital Network, which the company describes as a “highly scalable, standards-based server system that can deliver secure audio and video in both streaming and on-demand formats.” The company boasts that since their network is not restricted to particular service providers, any customer with a DV-280 and a high-speed Internet connection can access any media on the Aeon network, subject only to regional content licensing restrictions. The DV-220 supports video and audio in Windows Media Player 9 format; presumably, the device also relies on Microsoft’s digital rights management technology.
The DV-280’s features are listed as follows:
- Record up to 200 hours of television on the internal hard drive
- Burn up to 30 hours of video to a single recordable DVD disc
- Play digital media
