Amazon Improves Kindle DX Specs, Lowers Price

Amazon's new Kindle DX claims a 50 percent improvement in display contrast...and it's priced at $379 rather than $489.

Amazon.com has taken the wraps off a improved version of the Kindle DX, its largest ereader device with a 9.7-inch eInk display and 3G wireless capability. Amazon says the new version of the Kindle DX sports a 50 percent improvement in display contrast, meaning the unit displays clearer text and sharper images. Also appealing to consumers might be the Kindle DX’s new price tag: $379, rather than the $489 of its predecessor. It’s also got a new graphite-colored case.

“There’s no turning back once you read on our beautiful new Kindle DX screen,” said Amazon Kindle senior VP Steve Kessel, in a statement.

Aside from the color, contrast improvement, and the new pricing, however, the graphite Kindle DX bears the same specs as its pale predecessor: a 9.7-inch Eink display (viewable in sunlight), global 3G wireless so users can get new content anywhere they can get 3G signal, one week of battery life with wireless enabled (two weeks with wireless off), and a form factor less than a third of an inch thick. On the software side, everything is the same too: the Kindle DX can handle Kindle ebooks and PDF, sports Amazon’s new Facebook and Twitter capabilities, offers a text-to-speech feature, and can be used in either portrait or landscape mode.

The new graphic Kindle DX can be ordered today for $379; it starts shipping July 7.

  1. Lowie at 3:58pm 5th July 2010 Why hasn't Barnes & Noble come out with a large screen (9.7") model of nook to compete with Kindle DX yet? I want the large screen experience of the Kindle DX (I even prefer trade paperback size to mass market size when holding tangible books), but I also want the EPUB compatibility of the nook. Come on, B&N, please make a large screen nook to compete with Kindle DX!
  2. Ben Lee at 2:30am 2nd July 2010 LOL, Crunchgear was reporting 50X better contrast for a moment there. We all wish, right? Can’t wait to get my hands on this and test out the new screen. I seriously love the current screen technology already, so I cannot imagine how much more satisfied I will be when the contrast becomes 50 tim….err, 50% better :) Am guessing that Kindle 3, whenever it arrives, will use some form of this screen as well. Makes sense, but I hope they offer it at a better price than $379. That’s still a bit high considering the cost of iPad. Thanks for this news.
