Ford and Delphi have been working on an in-car digital music system that can syncronize its music tracks with computers on a wireless network.
The Gartner technology research firm says the number of Wi-Fi users in the United States is expected to more than triple from 9.3 million at the end of last year to 30 million by the end of this year. About 60 million Americans are music downloaders, according to the data research group Ipso-Reid Corp. Roughly half are between 34 and 54 years old — prime ages for auto buyers.
But the potential benefits of a Wi-Fi vehicle go beyond downloaded music. McNamara envisions drive-through Wi-Fi kiosks at gas stations and retail outlets that could store credit card information so gasoline, parking fees, highway tolls, even fast food could be ordered and paid for from the vehicle entertainment system.
