New device from Silicon Valley based start up is designed to copy CDs directly to an iPod without the need for a computer and iTunes.

Silicon Valley based start up Wingspan today announced a new device which takes the computer out of the equation for transferring music or video off of CDs or other devices to an iPod. The new iLoad ($249) and iLoad-v ($149) are expected to be available in early spring of this year.

The iLoad works by allowing consumers to transfer an entire CD or individual tracks to an iPod without being hooked up to a computer. The device, which measures 7.4

  2. rbelkin at 11:09pm 18th January 2006 This was the guy who went nuts when somone wrote a bad review for his iload. I think 'load' is the right word ... plus the whole gracenote DB in the machine already seems pretty hinckey - I'm not exactly how large the gracenote metadata/DB file is but I'm guessing it cannot fit onto one server HDD and for $249 per device, Gracenote licensed their entire DB files & all to place onto this portable device? Seems pretty hinckey to me.

    I could see a machine to transfer to an ipod - all you need is a ripper & an mp3 chip but the entire gracenote DB - unlikely?
