Napster Rolls Out Portable Music Service

The Napster to Go service allows you to purchase DRM protected songs from Napster and take them with you on your digital audio player - just like you can do with Apples iTunes.

“Until recently, music subscription services have been restricted in their ability to transfer songs they provide to portable players, while Apple has sold millions on the portable iPods by allowing users to buy songs from iTunes and store them on iPods. “

The Napster music service only costs $15 a month and gives you access to millions of songs from their catalog. Compared to iTunes pay-per-download model, the Napster subscription service sounds like a steal.

The new Napster service uses Microsoft technology named “Janus” to allow users to take music with them instead of only being able to keep it on their PC at home.

According to CNN, Napster will spend $30 million on a Super Bowl campaign comparing their service to Apple’s iTunes.

  1. Henry Volkman at 2:56pm 22nd May 2008 Can I be any more confused? No matter how hard I tried, I could not get my XM + Napster screen to recognize my Inno device. It wasn't even on their (XM +Napster) list of acceptable devices. I made sure that I was on the correct release of both the firmware and Napster software. When I talked to Pioneer's tech support about it they said it was a software issue and really didn't seem to care. I'm familiar with that type of attitude having been an IT type for more than 20 years. They give us a bad name. Unfortunately, I believe Pioneer puts the marketing stuff in the box and on the box to paint a picture just a little off center. Some of the blogs say liar but I'm not going there. I'll just move from being confused to disappointed.
