BetaNews is reporting that a new program developed by hacker Jon Lech Johansen, breaks the current Apple iTunes DRM protection allowing users to download music without DRM enabled.
“Most known for his software that breaks the copy protection of DVDs, Johansen with the help of two counterparts has released PyMusique, what they bill as “a fair interface to the iTunes Music Store.”
The software allows for the user to preview songs like the actual iTunes program, however when it downloads the songs, it downloads them without the DRM attached to it — allowing the user once the file is downloaded to convert it freely to any format they wish. Those with songs already downloaded from iTunes will be able to re-download their songs DRM-free as well. ”
Expect Apple to try and sue Johansen and his friends, or update the iPod Firmware with a fix to prevent his software from working long term.
