Sony Adds MP3 Support To NW-HD3

Someone at Sony has wisened up and decided to add MP3 support to their new NW-HD3 player slated for release in December.

“Sony is broadening support for the MP3 file format in its portable music player range. It will introduce a new hard drive-based MP3 player in December, and will offer software upgrades for earlier players with hard drive storage so they can play MP3s too.

The NW-HD3 can play MP3 files, but is otherwise similar to its predecessor, the NW-HD2, Sony spokesperson Shinji Obana says. The hard drive storage capacity is unchanged at 20GB.”

Sony lovers can now rejoice with this announcement. Hopefully with the addition of MP3 support, Sony can compete with Apple’s iPod player. Earlier in the week we announced that Blu-Ray, a Sony backed format, has lost support from four major movie studios. It is not a good year for Sony’s proprietary formats…
