Silicon Diamonds in the Rough: Unheralded Tech Advances for 2010

Create a song by singing the words first

Several iPhone apps are musical marvels: they allow you to hum a song to find out who wrote it, or even write a portion of a song and record vocal parts. LaDiDa is an interesting hybrid. It is a “reverse Karaoke machine” in that you can sing a song, and then the app fills in the background music to match. Developed by the Georgia Tech Music Intelligence Lab, the app examines the frequencies of your voice and determines the right notes to use, then digitizes your voice and fixes tuning problems.
