Resogun is an upcoming side-scrolling shoot ’em up (or shmup, for the aficionados) for the Playstation 4, to be available at launch. Developed by Housemarque, Resogun is the spiritual successor to their previous Super Stardust games, but while Super Stardust took place around a 3D sphere, Resogun will take place around a cylindrical playing field. In addition, enemies in Resogun are made up of voxels, 3-Dimensional pixels, each with their own physics, that allow for some impressive destruction.
The game tasks players with defending far-flung interstellar colonies from an alien threat. Three different ships with three different firing styles are available, along with a screen-clearing bomb, as per the traditional shoot ’em up formula. Resogun also includes the boost weapon of Housemarque’s previous titles, which allows the player to slam through rows of enemies at high speed. Unique to Resogun is the Overdrive mechanic, where players collect energy cubes dropped by defeated enemies to fill an Overdrive bar and then subsequently unleash a massive beam of energy on their foes. As if this were not enough, players must also balance destroying the hordes of enemies with picking up stranded humans via their tractor beam.
Resogun will be available for free via download to Playstation Plus subscribers.
