Ubisoft has showcased Edward Kenway’s stealth and assassination abilities in the forthcoming Assassin’s Creed IV: Black Flag a few times now, but if you were curious about the nautical aspects of the game, then the latest 10 minute walkthrough will answer a few of those questions.
Black Flag game director, Ashaf Ismael, takes Kenway through several different locations and side quests that will be available in the game. These include treasure hunting, bar brawls, ship-to-ship battles, and some updated older side events. Ismael notes that there will be 50 major locations and up to 75 uncharted islands for players to explore. It’s a huge world that, fortunately, won’t be too hard to explore thanks to modified view points.
Like in previous titles, view points will open new map areas for players but they’ll also act as fast travel beacons so that players don’t have to sail from island to island if they don’t want too. That being said, the oceans offer plenty of opportunity for exploration and piratical loot.
Looting takes several different forms in Black Flag including the ability to go on deep sea dives. While traversing the Caribbean in the Jackdaw, players can drop anchor near sunken ships and take a dive in the 17th century version of a submersible, the diving bell. While exploring these wrecks, players will need to watch out for animal enemies. Like in Assassin’s Creed III, wild animals are a potential danger with wolves and bears being replaced by eels and a variety of sharks. Couple that with the harpooning mini-game and we’re pretty sure PETA is going to be disappointed with this one as players hunt down bull sharks and the larger, more dangerous blue whales.
Assassin’s Creed IV: Black Flag hits the water on October 29th for PlayStation 3, Xbox 360, and PC. The game will launch with the PlayStation 4 and Xbox One when they release on November 15th and November 22nd, respectively.
