Battlefield 3 multiplayer trailer takes to the skies

Despite incredible graphics powered by a new engine, a long tradition of solid games and the support of EA, Battlefield 3 still faces something of an uphill battle when it hits the markets this October. It will still sell millions of copies and do honor to the developers’ ancestors, but it will also be releasing just a few weeks before the juggernaut that is Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 3, and even if BF3 is the best game in the history of the world, it still probably won’t outsell Modern Warfare 3—that’s just how it is.

But then again, it doesn’t have to outsell MW3. It just needs to deliver a solid FPS experience, and the Battlefield fans will support it, as well as those that still love FPS online games but may be tired of the Call of Duty series. But if it can deliver on the promise of what we have seen, Activision should be more than a little nervous.

The single player campaign has only been teased, but the graphics look…well, insane. That alone will sell some copies and attract the interest of many, but the multiplayer is what will make this game a competitor to MW3, and so far it is looking like a real contender.

Put aside the destructible environments and top-notch graphics. Ignore the classes and game types. Overlook the tight play controls, and still you are left with one major advantage for Battlefield 3 over MW3—vehicles. And not just any old vehicles, but jets. The standard tanks and transport vehicles return, but Battlefield 3 will also allow you to fly jets, attack ground targets and even engage in squadron-based dogfights. The series has used planes and helicopters before, but this is the next step.

Check out the video, and look for Battlefield 3 on PC, PS3 and Xbox 360 on October 25.
