In what will technically be the third game under the increasingly inaccurately named “Final Fantasy XIII” banner, Square Enix has released a video highlighting a bit of gameplay for Lightning Returns: Final Fantasy XIII.
The game will feature the character of Lightning who appeared in the first FF13, but was absent in the sequel to FF13, which was named FF13-2…. but it wasn’t really a sequel as much as a spin-off. Even though it kind of was. To make it even more confusing to those that aren’t already familiar with the series, the third game in the FF13 series – not the main Final Fantasy series – will be released nearly four years after Final Fantasy XIV, which itself just had a sequel of sorts with Final Fantasy XIV: A Realm Reborn. Never let it be said that Square Enix is one to let a good number go to waste.
Lightning Returns will be set 500 years after the non-sequel sequel. And while the gameplay has been overhauled, it still remains true to the other games in the series. The series-within-a-series, not necessarily the larger series. Oh, never mind, just watch the video.
Lightning Returns will be released in Japan later this year, and then hit North American shores on February 11, when it is released for the PlayStation 3 and Xbox 360.
