If survival horror games – and the horror genre in general – have taught us anything, it’s that people huddled in corners, rocking back and forth, should be avoided at all costs. Seriously, just back away slowly and leave the poor, probably doomed soul to their own devices. Alternatively, you could walk up to them slowly with your arm outstretched and be sucked into a world of madness. Your choice.

The upcoming survival horror game The Evil Within features this, and lots of other, familiar survival horror imagery. The story follows Detective Sebastian Castellanos after he and his partner are called in to investigate mass murder at a local asylum. Things quickly get weird, and Castellanos finds that he is being hunted. Even worse, the world he knows appears to have been replaced by something much more sinister. Check out our preview for a closer look.

The Evil Within was thought up by director Shinji Mikami, the creator of the Resident Evil and Dino Crisis franchises, as well as one of the people behind the original Devil May Cry. Mikami struck out on his own and founded Tango Gameworks back in 2010, and The Evil Within is the studio’s first project.

Check out the trailer, but be warned, it might not be safe for most work environments. The Evil Within is set for release on PC, PlayStation 3, PlayStation 4, Xbox 360, and Xbox One on August 26, 2014.
