Acrophobia isn’t something typically associated with video games. However, it seems players are going to have a tough time shaking that queasy, unnerving fear of falling when traversing the Call of Duty: Ghosts‘ Free Fall multiplayer map. Bundled with the upcoming title as downloadable pre-order bonus, the map was first inspired by a cinematic scene wrapped within the single-player campaign, pitting players against one another inside a shattered skyscraper wedged between two high-rises. Activision and Infinity Ward’s big multiplayer reveal unveiled the map in August, but the Free Fall trailer is the first gameplay footage shown from the newly-announced dynamic map, highlighting new gameplay engine capabilities and the map’s constantly changing components.
Sight lines and entry points shift as beams fall from the ceiling; more so from the walls, given that players are running atop the the glass windows composing the sides of the building, and the entire level seems to sporadically drop hundreds of feet at a moment’s notice. The action is fast-paced, filled with knees slides, attack dogs, and plenty of dizzying falls — and though the opening sequence isn’t quite vertigo in the U2 sense — it’s a topsy-turvy world nonetheless.
Call of Duty: Ghosts launches on Nov. 5 on current-gen consoles and as a Day One title on the PlayStation 4 and Xbox One on Nov. 15 and 22, respectively. Make sure to peruse the bevvy of pre-order packages from various retailers, as some include the aforementioned Free Fall map, while others tack on Eminem’s upcoming album, The Marshall Mathers LP 2.
