Friction Games continues to horrorify with it’s new game, ‘SOMA’

SOMA, the next game from Friction Games, the disturbed people behind the Amnesia and Penumbra survival horror games, hits hard out of the gate. Although it’s not slated for release on PC and the PlayStation 4 until 2015, Friction already has a little bit of creepy gameplay to show off that barely scrapes the surface of what’s going on in the game.  Nothing is what it seems, but there are hints of The Matrix and Alien in the slime-covered walls and tentacled machines seen in the trailer.

Friction Games describe their latest horror title thusly:

Strange occurrences are disrupting the routines of the PATHOS-2 research facility. The radio is silent. Behavioral anomalies of the machines are increasingly dangerous, if not… malevolent. The facility is devolving into chaos. No weapons, and the only escape is practically unthinkable.

In other teasers, Friction hinted that a conscious computer or machine is behind the chaos of SOMA. On the PlayStation Blog, Creative Director Thomas Grip offers a bit more explanation. Again though, it’s just a hint at what’s in store for players. Those of you who enjoy digging for clues might note the title itself. In western literature, Soma generally refers to a drug used in rituals that later played a role in Aldous Huxley’s A Brave New World. There the drug was used in a celebratory manner that kept the population happy and pacified most of the time.
