Fans of the Web comic – and its gaming empire – Penny Arcade were excited when the duo of Jerry Holkins and Mike Krahulik revealed that they would be helping to create a video game based on their avatars, Tycho and Gabe.
Initially, the process went well with Penny Arcade Adventures: On the Rain-Slick Precipice of Darkness episode one being released in May 2008 and episode II following fairly quickly in October of the same year. However, due to problems with the developers, HotHead Games, and an inability to keep up with the demanding workload, the promised episodes III and IV were cancelled indefinitely.
In the last year though, the PA crew secretly hooked up with Zeboyd Games, previously of Cthulu Saves the World and Breath of Death VII, to create a new episode with more of the work on Zeboyd’s head instead of Krahulik and Holkins’ end.
With Episode III, Zeboyd took the series in a new direction with 16-bit visuals, an overworld map, and following more of a 1990s classic RPG style — which includes those RPG menus, for better or worse.
If you played the first two then you might be excited for a return to the steampunk world of Rain-Slick. Look for it June 25 for Xbox Live, Steam, Mac, iOS, and Android. The previous two iterations were released on the PlayStation Network but there’s no word on whether or not episode III will make it to Sony’s system.
