The above video has been blowing minds around the internet for the last day or so. Quantic Dream, the developers behind Heavy Rain and Indigo Prophecy, built a tech demo of the company’s “Kara” motion capture engine. The demo was shown during a talk by QD’s David Cage during the Game Developers Conference in San Francisco.
According to Cage, the demo is a year old and the engine is already two versions beyond the one used for this video and supposedly 50% even more powerful.
The company used 28 cameras for Heavy Rain capture sessions, Kara uses 65. Cage says that 90 markers are placed on the actors’ face alone. Another 90 are placed on the actors’ body.
Quantic Dream says that the Kara demo is not indicative of an upcoming game from the company. The video is strictly a demo for the engine.
You really do need to sit down and watch this fascinating video. There are some dubbing issues but the graphics and motion of the engine is outstanding to look at. Might even be a little bit emotional.
