100-year-old Nintendo DS addict attributes sharp mind to gaming device

A report last week suggested that to ward off brain diseases such as Alzheimer’s, constant cerebral stimulation through activities like games and reading could be the key. And one woman, 100-year-old Kathleen Connell, would certainly appear to back up such findings, with the centenarian putting her longevity and sharp mind almost entirely down to her Nintendo DS gaming device.

Kathleen, who jokingly says she doesn’t feel a day over 80, clearly loves her Nintendo machine, describing it as “great” and “absolutely super.”

She can be found on the hand-held device most days, pausing only to put the kettle on for a cup of tea before packing up at around 10pm when, she says, her brain starts feeling “a bit addled.”

Kathleen, who lives in East Renfrewshire in Scotland, said that the machine helps her memory stay in good shape, as she used to have trouble remembering things.

One thing she’s particularly proud of is the mental age she scored with the popular Brain Trainer game—just 64—pretty impressive for someone now in triple figures. Other games she enjoys playing include Scrabble, My Word Coach, Art Academy and Family Fortunes.

Last week researchers at the University of California claimed to have found a connection between activities that stimulate the brain and levels of a kind of protein that is believed to cause Alzheimer’s, a disease marked by dementia and memory loss. Of course, it’s not just playing brain games on hand-held devices that researchers believe will prevent the onset of the disease, though Kathleen Connell finds the Nintendo alone works for her.

“I can’t speak highly enough of this Nintendo,” the sprightly senior citizen told the Daily Telegraph in a video interview. “It’s helped to keep my brain as active as possible in my old age.”

2023 gaming report card: how did PlayStation, Xbox, and Nintendo score?
The Xbox Series X and PS5

It's been a long year filled with massive games, but we've finally reached the end of 2023. There's no question that this year will be remembered as one of the all-time best for new releases -- and one of the worst for game creators -- but it's been a whirlwind 12 months for the "big three" console makers. PlayStation, Xbox, and Nintendo all had pivotal years, though in entirely different ways. While the Nintendo Switch took a victory lap, the PS5 entered an experimental era. The Xbox Series X, on the other hand, finally delivered the suite of exclusives fans had been waiting for ... with mixed results.

To reflect on such an eventful year, we've decided to take on the role of teacher and hand each company a final grade for 2023. We took several factors into account here. Exclusive games are a major component of the final grade, naturally, but we also looked at how well each system maintained its wider ecosystem. That includes supporting services like PS Plus and Game Pass and evaluating how new hardware changed how we play.

Nintendo Switch vs. PlayStation Portal: which portable device is best?
PlayStation Portal and the switch on a table.

Handheld gaming has come back in a big way this past generation. Nintendo formerly held the crown as the king of the dedicated handheld market with its unfathomably successful DS line, which would eventually combine into a home console with the equally impressive Switch. PlayStation attempted to get into this market with the PSP and PS Vita but appeared to bow out of that competition when the latter failed to achieve much success. However, the new PlayStation Portal device could provide players with an alternative to Nintendo's aging system.

If you're debating between the Nintendo Switch and PlayStation Portal, here's a full breakdown of how the two devices stack up.
