John Mulaney: Comeback Kid

john mulaney comeback kid 2

It seems odd that John Mulaney should need to make a “comeback.” A few years ago, the young stand-up’s career seemed poised for a supernova. His résumé included six years on the SNL writing staff and a stand-up special on Comedy Special, and NBC had given him the greenlight for his own sitcom. The sitcom, simply titled Mulaney, bombed with viewers and critics, and Mulaney’s star seemed to dim. That’s a shame, because as Comeback Kid demonstrates, Mulaney is still one of the most talented stand-up comedians working today. Mulaney’s subject matter is oddly light in an age when irony and depression are trendy, but Mulaney delivers his anecdotes with aplomb, making even observations about Back to the Future feel weighty. His observational style may be old-fashioned, but his verve and knack for the rhythm of storytelling is unparalleled in the industry today.

Hell on Wheels

hell on wheels netflix image 2

No industry embodies America at its most ingenious and its most rapacious than the railroad. Pushing eastward in the 19th century, the railroad companies had to carve through nature as well as the native populations in their path, and it’s in this violent backdrop that Hell on Wheels sets its scene. The show follows Cullen Bohannon (Anson Mount), a former Confederate soldier now working as a supervisor for the Union Pacific Railroad. Although the westward expansion is trouble enough, Bohannon has another goal: finding and killing the Union soldiers who murdered his wife and son. Hell on Wheels is pure pulp, perfect for Western fans who find the TV landscape a bit lacking.
