Those of you who religiously read our gaming coverage may recall a piece yesterday in which we reported on a mysterious image from the Bethesda Softworks Twitter feed that everyone was convinced heralded the announcement of the first downloadable content addition to The Elder Scrolls V: Skyrim. As it turns out however, that image was a teaser for Dishonored.
Dishonored, for those of you still in the dark, is an upcoming first-person action title from Arkane Studios (the developer behind 2002’s Arx Fatalis). Though that alone should inspire interest in many of you, the real coup here is that Arkane has enlisted the services of Deus Ex lead designer Harvey Smith for the development of Dishonored, and like that title, Smith’s latest promises to offer players a wealth of choices that can drastically affect the world around them. If the developer’s claims are to be believed, killing people in Dishonored will have tangible, often unexpected consequences on how the game unfolds.
Though we still lack a solid release date for the Xbox 360, PlayStation 3 and PC title, Bethesda Softworks has now offered a bit more info on the game’s backstory:
Dishonored casts you as a supernatural assassin driven by revenge. You are the once-trusted bodyguard of the beloved Empress. Framed for her murder, you become an infamous assassin, known only by the disturbing mask that has become your calling card. In a time of uncertainty, when the city is being besieged by plague and ruled by an oppressive government armed with strange technologies, dark forces conspire to bestow upon you abilities beyond those of any common man.
In Dishonored, creatively eliminate your targets with the flexible combat system as you combine the numerous supernatural abilities, weapons and unusual gadgets at your disposal. Pursue your enemies under the cover of darkness or ruthlessly attack them head on with weapons drawn. The outcome of each mission plays out based on the choices you make.
Most crucially however, today’s announcement includes a four-and-a-half minute debut trailer for the title that includes all the intrigue, violence and convincing lighting effects one might hope for.
