Borderlands 2’s final DLC coming in April

Borderlands 2 has been churning out DLC for well over a year now, with new characters, massive new areas, and now the “Headhunter” packs that offer new boss battles. All good things must come to an end though, and Gearbox is inviting fans to “enjoy one last Borderlands 2 Adventure.”

The adventure in question is the fifth and final Headhunter pack, titled Sir Hammerlock Versus the Son of Crawmerax, and the pack concludes what Gearbox dubbed its “Season 2” of the Borderlands 2 DLC. The pack will be available on Mac, PC, PlayStation 3, and Xbox 360 on April 15 for $2.99.

The setup for the final Headhunter pack takes you to Wam Bam Island, for a vacation shared by Brick, Mordecai, Lilith, and Sir Hammerlock. “At the end of your adventure on Wam Bam Island, you will battle a foe that may look familiar – Crawmerax Jr., the son of the great crab worm from The Secret Armory of General Knoxx add-on from the original Borderlands,” writes Gearbox.

This marks the 12th content release for Borderlands 2 since its September 18, 2012 launch, and it will presumably be the last. Of course, initially, there were only supposed to be three Headhunter packs, so don’t count Gearbox out just yet. Still, the game has had tremendous post-launch support. It had to end sometime though. Gearbox has had incredible success with the game, and helped to make it 2K’s best-selling title of all time, with over 8.5 million copies sold. 

With the release of the final DLC, it’s shaping up to be a busy spring for Gearbox. Earlier this week Sony announced that the new model of the PS Vita would also ship this spring, and one bundle would include the upcoming PS Vita version of Borderlands 2. That version will ship with several DLCs already included, but that probably won’t include the Headhunter content. Whether or not that content is going to be available for the Vita is still unannounced.

We've learned what games will come to Xbox Game Pass over the first half of this April, and leading the batch is Lego 2K Drive, a Lego racing game that's a solid alternative to the Forza Horizon games that are also available on Microsoft's subscription service.

Lego 2K Drive was released in May 2023 and is an enjoyable racing game where players can build their own Lego vehicles and race throughout several open worlds. It found the middle ground between the likes of Mario Kart and Forza Horizon and thrives in that space, even if the microtransactions can be a little aggressive for a game aimed at children. Playground Games has not yet confirmed if another Forza Horizon game is in the works at this time, so Xbox fans can play this game to fill that void until a new one is announced.

Embracer Group finally sells Gearbox Software, but keeps Gearbox Publishing

Embracer Group finally confirmed that it is selling Borderlands studio Gearbox Entertainment to Take-Two Interactive, but there's a catch: Embracer Group will retain ownership of Gearbox Publishing.

Embracer Group acquired Gearbox Entertainment in 2021 but is now offloading much of it as part of a restructuring plan meant to recoup money after a deal fell through in 2023. Take-Two Interactive's 2K already published all the Borderlands games, so it's a sensible $460 million purchase that also nets them franchises like Tiny Tina's Wonderlands, Homeworld, Risk of Rain, Brothers in Arms, and Duke Nukem. In terms of studios, Take-Two Interactive is only acquiring Gearbox Software, Gearbox Montreal, and Gearbox Studio Quebec, the company's primary development arms. Randy Pitchford will remain CEO as well.
