Rumors are devious. They can, sadly, inspire hope and you know what they say: Only a fool trusts a hope. Anyone encouraged by the rumor that Crysis creators Crytek were hard at work on a sequel to the long-dormant TimeSplitters shooter series, bad news: There is no TimeSplitters 4.
Speaking with Eurogamer on Friday, a Crytek spokesperson confirmed, rather hilariously, that a sequel to Free Radical’s fondly remembered games isn’t in the works.
“For TimeSplitters 4, with ever spiralling development costs, massive teams, and endless crunch we decided on a more radical development strategy. In short the experiment was to implement the infinite monkey theorem,” said Crytek, implying that the company planned to put as many monkeys as possible on the job of creating the game with the hopes that one would ultimately be completed. “With cloning being a far too expensive option, we spent all of the development budget on buying monkeys on the black market. Those seven monkeys are now sat in a room with typewriters and lots of mirrors, and we fully expect TimeSplitters 4 to be finished soon. Rumors are that they haven’t written any code but just tease the press from time to time. Those damn monkeys.”
Those damn monkeys indeed.
At the very least, this is a far more palatable denial of a rumor than the typical corporate line of, “No comment.” Thought it does reinforce that Crytek have the sense of humor to make a proper TimeSplitters.
