‘Dark Souls III: Ashes of Ariandel’ player-versus-player is a duel to the death

Both the Souls series and Bloodborne feature player-versus-player battles through the game’s “invasion” system, but it appears that Dark Souls III‘s first expansion, Ashes of Ariandel,  will be taking a slightly more structured approach for team-based fights.

The Ashes of Ariandel player-versus-player trailer emphasizes the duels that invaders have been setting up themselves for years, with both participants bowing as a master of ceremonies sets the mood. As always, you’re also free — depending on how you were summoned — to betray the player you’re helping and literally stab them in the back, preferably after you’ve defeated a Stray Demon.

But a new competitive play-focused arena, the “Immortal Competition,” is the real star of the show here. Two groups of three players creep forward, staring each other down before they charge in for an attack. The area is desolate, with few obstacles aside from metal pipes and craggy rock around the perimeter.

As you might expect, these battles can turn into absolute throwdowns, with one player utilizing the Nameless King’s powerful Dragonslayer Swordspear. Another character appears to be the Nameless King himself — intimidation is truly half the battle when you’re fighting against a real person.

The decision to implement the Immortal Competition at all appears to be an about-face for developer FromSoftware’s director Hitetaka Miyazaki, who had said during last year’s E3 that there wouldn’t be a specific arena for duels in Dark Souls III. It’s possible, however, that he was only referring to the base game.

Dark Souls III: Ashes of Ariandel is out for PC, Xbox One, and PlayStation 4 on October 25, and it comes with much more than just competitive enhancements. New gorgeous, snowy areas, aggressive enemies, and grotesque bosses await you, assuming you can actually make progress without getting killed by another player first.

The best games like Dark Souls
the surge 2

FromSoftware has made many, many games before 2009's Demon's Souls and the 2011 spiritual successor Dark Souls, but for the majority of gamers, this series was their first exposure to the developer. Gamers fell in love with the new, brutal game design these Souls games provided, and although FromSoftware has been able to pump out one of these games almost every two years or so, it wasn't enough to satisfy the hunger for more experiences like Dark Souls.

Each game on this list will have something familiar to fans of Dark Souls, but also puts its own unique spin on the genre to make it stand out as more than just a simple clone. If you've played the series to death and are looking for a new challenge, check out these picks for the best games like Dark Souls.

The Dark Souls series is notorious for its difficulty, but players no longer have any excuse for giving up, after a Twitch streamer was able to beat Dark Souls 3 with a level 1 character while using a dance pad as her controller.

While Dark Souls 3 is easier compared to its predecessors, it remains challenging enough to frustrate players ranging from beginners to veterans of the series. Twitch streamer Luality, however, was able to beat the game using a dance pad, which should make most Dark Souls 3 players question their skills with a normal controller.

Can a game like Dark Souls work on the iPhone? Pascal’s Wager wants to find out
Pascal's Wager

Difficult and reflex-heavy games like Dark Souls might not seem like the best fit for a mobile platform, but technology is improving to the point that this is, perhaps, no longer true. TipWorks' action-role-playing game Pascal's Wager is looking to prove naysayers wrong, and with the power of the iPhone 11, it might succeed.

Shown during Apple's special event on September 10, Pascal's Wager features a dark fantasy that is extremely similar to From Software's original Dark Souls, but rather than create your own character, you can pick and switch between several of them to best suit your situation.
