EA planning to massively expand the Dead Space universe

The Dead Space franchise has quickly risen through the catalog of EA games to become one of the publisher’s most important properties. Along with the two full games, the series has spawned an on-rails shooter, a puzzle game, two animated films a novel and two comic books—not to mention the odd shirt, bobble head, action figures, and other odd piece of merchandise.

Earlier this year a restructuring of executives at EA threatened the franchise, and rumors began to float that Dead Space 3 had been cancelled. Dead Space 2 was a commercial success with well over 2 million copies sold, but the higher-ups were reportedly underwhelmed with the figures and expected more of the property.

Those rumors were soon swallowed and eaten by a new set of rumors insisting that Dead Space 3 was not only still in development, but it was fairly far along in the process, enough so that details of the game have begun to leak. Although the title still has not officially been confirmed, the game will likely be set on an ice planet and the darkness of space will be replaced by the blinding whiteness of a blizzard on an ice planet named Tau Volantis, the sight of yet another monster-spawning Marker. Further leaks suggest that the protagonist Isaac Clarke will be battling his own scarred psyche, and that this will be the conclusion of his story.

According to an insider that spoke with Kotaku, EA wants to dramatically expand the Dead Space universe with a series of new games, all in different genres.

The report claims that EA is pushing for a first-person shooter, a flight-sim, and an adventure game that would play in a similar fashion to the Uncharted games, and possibly more. If that is true then you can likely expect several new Dead Space comics, animated movies, novels and more.

A Dead Space movie has also been rumored–just like every major video game property is rumored to be in development at one studio or other. This one seems to have at least some steam behind it though, and D.J. Caruso (I Am Number Four, Eagle Eye) is supposedly still developing the property. The odds of it actually getting made are still very low, but if EA is pushing to expand the Dead Space universe, a movie could help to that end. Assuming it isn’t a terrible movie, of course.

All of this is still unconfirmed though, including Dead Space 3 which EA has yet to confirm, even though it seems both likely and imminent. EA may be waiting to see the results of Dead Space 3 before moving ahead with any franchise plans, but it sounds like the property may soon be receiving massive exposure.

Red Dead Redemption is coming to Nintendo Switch and PS4 this month

The original Red Dead Redemption is coming to two new platforms, PS4 and Nintendo Switch, later this month. It'll retail for $50 on both platforms.
Red Dead Redemption and Undead Nightmare Coming to Switch and PS4
Rockstar Games' open-world western game first launched in 2010 for Xbox 360 and PS3. It was critically acclaimed and a smash sales hit, creating a new franchise for Rockstar that could stand alongside the likes of Grand Theft Auto. It received a sequel, Red Dead Redemption 2, in 2019, but the original Red Dead Redemption remained stuck on older platforms outside of backward compatibility support on Xbox One and Xbox Series X/S.
That's why fans got excited when a rating for the game from the Game Rating and Administration Committee of Korea popped up. We've now learned that this rating is for new Nintendo Switch and PS4 ports of Red Dead Redemption by Double Eleven Studios. Red Dead Redemption will release across both of those platforms digitally on August 17, with a physical launch to follow on October 13.

It will cost $50 and includes the base campaign as well as the zombie-infested Undead Nightmare expansion; the Red Dead Online multiplayer is not included. This is the first time Red Dead Redemption will ever be on a Nintendo system, although it doesn't look like the port will have much in the way of Switch-exclusive features. That said, a press release does reveal that this will be the first version of the game to include Brazilian Portuguese, Korean, Latin American Spanish, Polish, Russian, Simplified Chinese, and Traditional Chinese localizations.
Red Dead Redemption comes out on PS4 and Nintendo Switch on August 17.

A Black Panther game is in the works at one of EA’s newest studios
Black Panther in his Fortnite trailer

EA and Marvel Games confirmed that a single-player Black Panther video game is in the works at Cliffhanger Games, one of its newest game development studios.

EA and Kevin Stephens, former VP and Studio Head of Middle-Earth: Shadow of Mordor dev Monolith Productions, formed Cliffhanger Games in May 2021. It was established alongside other new studios like Ridgeline Games, Ripple Effect, and skate. developer Full Circle. Rumors of this game's existence emerged about a year ago, and an EA-published Black Panther game only became more plausible when we learned that an Iron Man game is in active development at Star Wars Squadrons and Dead Space remake studio EA Motive. Now, we know this Black Panther game is real and learned a bit more about what to expect from it.

Classic Telltale meets Dead Space in The Expanse: A Telltale Series
The Expanse Drummer looks at the camera

It wasn’t too much of a surprise to hear that developer Telltale was coming back with an episodic game based on SyFy and Amazon’s popular sci-fi series The Expanse. Before it was shut down and revived, Telltale made a name for itself on such licensed games. What was much more intriguing to me was that Deck Nine Games, the studio behind 2021’s excellent Life is Strange: True Colors, was handling the development of the project and that it was looking to expand the world of The Expanse by revealing the backstory of one of its most mysterious characters while expanding the gameplay possibilities that a Telltale-style narrative adventure game can provide.

That’s why I was excited to get a chance to play The Expanse: A Telltale Series early at an event and speak to Cara Gee, the actress behind the game’s main character Carmina Drummer, as well as its game director Stephan Frost. What I discovered was an experience that feels faithful to both classic narrative adventure games and The Expanse, while also feeling a bit like Dead Space.
Perfecting the Telltale formula
The Expanse is a hit television show based on a series of sci-fi books. While it’s not as popular as the likes of Star Wars or Star Trek, it has a passionate fanbase who adore its more realistic take on the physics and politics that would be more likely to play out if humanity ever managed to populate Mars and the Asteroid Belt. As the series progresses, it does learn harder and harder into the sci-fi elements with a powerful Protomolcule, aliens, and eventually Ring Gates that allow people to travel far around the galaxy.
