F.E.A.R. 3 unleashes Soul King multiplayer trailer

When it comes to online multiplayer games, especially competitive first-person shooter titles, the market is getting a bit saturated. When RAGE announced that its online multiplayer would skip the traditional gun fights in favor of online racing, there were riots in the streets. Well, maybe not riots, but it raised eyebrows. The online component of a FPS has become so common that if there is a first-person shooter coming out that doesn’t have an online multiplayer, it stands out. So with the competition being what it is, developers are constantly looking for ways to give their games an edge. Sometimes that comes through the leveling system and unlockables, but the best games know that it comes from gametypes.

In F.E.A.R. 3, developer Day 1 Studios is trying out a few new things.

One of those things is “Soul King”, a new type of multiplayer game where you begin as a spirit with no physical form and no way to injure others. Your goal is to then possess a soldier, who then becomes your weapon. From there you attempt to harvest as many souls as possible by killing enemy AI and the three other live opponents. Once you take the lead, you are revealed as the soul king, which makes you a target for the other players. To keep it interesting, when you are the soul king and are killed, you lose half of your souls. In theory it will mean that the best players are using a mixture of skill and strategy to try to gain the lead at the correct time.

Check out the trailer below, and look for F.E.A.R. 3 for PC, PS3 and Xbox 360 on June 21.
