GameStop does not want the PlayStation 4 and Xbox 720 to block used games. The retail chain is already closing 250 stores around the world over the next year, and only opening or acquiring 100 new locations over the same period. No more growth for the one-time titan of video game retail profits. Fewer people are buying video games in stores, and for a company whose profits live and die by the used game market, a future where Durango and Orbis don’t play used discs looks particularly dire.
“Over the course of the last year, we’ve had the opportunity to do research, and share that research with the console makers, and to demonstrate to them that consumers want the ability to play pre-owned games,” said GameStop CFO Rob Lloyd at the Goldman Sachs Technology and Internet Conference, “They want portability in their games, they want to play physical games. To not have those things would be a substantial reason for them to not purchase a new console. I think approximately 60-percent of customers have said that they would not buy a new console if it didn’t play pre-owned games.”
The argument against used games has always been that it takes money out of the hands of publishers and developers. A new copy of Call of Duty: Black Ops 2 sold at GameStop sees a percentage of the sale going on to Activision Blizzard and the studios involved in the production, from Treyarch to Ravensoft, see their compensation affected by those sales. When GameStop buys back a copy of the game for store credit and sells it again for $50, that entire sale goes to GameStop. This is why more and more console game publishers have included “Online Passes” for multiplayer games or single-player games with online components. Those single use codes ensure that even a used game can hopefully generate some revenue.
As it’s always done though, GameStop insists that the used game market is vital to the health of next generation consoles.
“Publishers understand that a healthy pre-owned games market helps them to sell more new games and the reason is that our buy-sell-trade model puts over $1 billion worth of currency in the customer’s hands every year. And that currency goes primarily to the purchase of new games.”
Lloyd acknowledged that even though it’s pushing Sony and Microsoft to play its way, GameStop will still be in the PlayStation 4 and Xbox 720 business. “We’ll be able to sell the new consoles regardless of what features, or what they do or don’t allow. We’ll have leading market share on the sales of those consoles, we’ll adapt to what it does to the pre-owned business, and one of the ways we’ll do that is through a continued healthy pre-owned business for today’s generation of consoles.”
gamestop will get a taste of their own medicine cheating ppl all these years with trade ins
“Cheating”? How are they cheating you with trade in value? Have you ever been to a pawn shop before? It works the same way. If you bought a product that cost $60 and try to take to gamestop or a pawn shop you’ll get half back of what you bought it for or a little under.
They’ll only give a little more if the game you traded in is rare and also in high demand (it also helps a lot with how old the game is). If they gave you over $40 for your game they’d be selling it back at a lose. Since they’d be giving you $40 and re-selling it for $55, so when the copy you traded in sells they’d be only making $15 back. That’s not a lot money for Gamestop at all. They need to make the highest profit possible from reselling used games in order to survive.
Because when a new copy sells most of money goes back to the game copies, while with used games gamestop gets all the money. Plus even if this does hurt gamestop don’t act like it doesn’t effect you if this happens.
If they block used games you won’t be to sell your games anywhere be it online like places like ebay or amazon or in stores. Not to mention you won’t even be able to do something as simple as borrowing a video game or bringing it over to friends house and playing the game on his system anymore.
I’m not saying I like gamestop’s trade in value but if you know how businesses works you’ll see how they really aren’t cheating you. If you don’t like their trade in value sell it online.
you understand they don’t give you half right? They literally give you about 15% of what it’s worth. Example, I went to go trade in MW3, because well, it’s MW3, a while ago. At the time, they still are selling it for 50+ dollars. So I expect to atleast get 15 bucks out of it, that seems reasonable correct? But, sadly, I was mistaken, they valued the game at 7.50 and now it just collects dust at home considering I’m not trading in a game I recently bought for full price, back for almost nothing. That’s why gamestop is corrupt.
Yes, I have to agree with the cheating people on used games. Back with the PS2, a $50 game used to get you $30 in a trade in. Now the games cost $10 more and you are lucky to get back $25.
Umm I have gotten $30 trade in value from gamestop with some of my games this gen, nothing really has changed. Some games will get $30 but not all and it was the same back in ps2 era. I remember trading in some ps2 games during that gen and only getting $25.
If you don’t like it, don’t do it. Seems pretty simple to me.
I buy more used games than new, but it’s hard not to see GameStop going the way of Blockbuster.
BB became the way it did because of Netflix and then redbox. After all why pay that much money to rent a few videos when you can watch thousands of them at home for only 8 dollars a month? Unless gaming gets a service like that I don’t see Gamestop failing like BB anytime soon.
there’s already something like that, its called gamefly. 20bucks a month or so you can rent a game, and a bit more you can rent 2 games and keep it as long as you can. if you wanna buy it you can get it at a discount and if you want to rent a new game you can return the game you have and they will send you the other game you wanna rent.
now they added a feature where you can play PC games as well with your subscription and I believe that one is unlimited so I guess this one caused some damage to gamestop as well. and if gamefly improve their service then gamestop’s future will be doomed.
That’s not really the same thing has Netflix’s streaming service. Because how Gamefly works is that you have return the game you rented first in order to rent again. While with Netflix’s streaming service you can watch shows and movies instantly without waiting.
Not to mention there’s the problem with Gamefly running out copies and you having to wait till they get some more for you to rent. Netflix does have DVD service it’s just not as used as their streaming service due to the waiting period.
PC games don’t really damage Gamestop that bad since they can’t sell used PC games anyway. They barely even carry any new copies of PC games in their stores.
Perhaps record stores would have been a better example. I don’t recall the last time I purchased a CD.
The simple fact is that the need for physical media is virtually nonexistent. All gaming platforms, console or mobile, have already established their own online store. It’s only a matter of time before all games will be purchased through them.
Virtually nonexistent? No it’s not not even close for console games. For PC games and CDs yes because the space needed to store all those items is unlimited on computers (a song for example is only a few Megs). Plus CDs are very different in size compared to video games. Majority of video games have GBs worth of space.
Not everyone has that great of internet speed (be it location or just willingness to pay for better speeds) to download all that space. Not to mention because of companies and constant added security, consoles are very restrictive with space. Like I said before, computers are able to have thousands of songs and games because a person can just simply go out a buy a 1TB hard drive every time the other one gets full.
However, the same is not true for consoles and I doubt with how game companies (such as Sony or Nintendo) are nowadays that it will ever be. Even if you put a 1TB harddrive in your ps3 when that space runs out you’ll be force to delete something to make space.
It’s not even always the game itself that takes lots of space, many times (because of DLC and numerous patches) it’s also the game data. So for the average consumer who still buys lots of physical video game copies and doesn’t have great speeds the amount of time it would take them to download the game again if it’s deleted would take hours.
Not to mention many console gamers still love physical media because they are collectors, they like to sell their games, and they like sales sales happened on the consoles but not as often as physical stores) if console sales were like Steam that point wouldn’t mean much.
It will be VERY long time before digital media is the only media available for video games or that might not even happen. As CDs are still available even though Itunes (and the internet in general) has been available for years.
‘need’ for physical media is virtually nonexistent. Need is my point. I don’t necessarily ‘need’ a physical copy to play a game. That is the direction ALL media is trending toward, regardless of those still on 56k, or the size of your hard drive.
I’m sure there will always be some type of physical copy, but the need for it is only dwindling. The next gen of gaming systems might not push that need out completely, but within 10 years GameStop will likely fall the way of BB. The writing is on the wall.
Except like we still do “need” physical copies for consoles. Companies also still “need” physical copies. Contrary to what some gamers like to believe not everyone in the US has access to internet. In fact, the number of people still without internet is a lot bigger than what some people realize.
Game companies know this so to ensure that they get chance to get as much sales as possible they need physical copies. Once again unless a “cheap” streaming service like Netflix comes along for video games, GS won’t be gone like BB at least not in 10 years.
Games are just too big in size (and are only going to get bigger in comping due to better technology) for the average consumer (by average I mean for example say a child who plays COD) to download.
GO Game Stop Save our love used games
Gamestop is a company that provides thousands of jobs so I support this.
have the same mentality as Jason. I don’t like Gamestop, never sell my games or buy used from them..
…but removing the ability to buy used games is complete garbage. if prices of games fell I might be a little more inclined to except it, since they claim the recent price hike to $60 was due in part to used game sales, but I doubt that will happen.
Yup, it harms the consumer. Never a good thing to do that, especially if the consumer is used to being able to buy/sell used games.
Maybe Gamestop should invest in or acquire studios. The future seems to be shifting a little more towards the content creators. Acquiring GameFly might be an option, but a streaming rental service would have to be introduced and that might be something developers or console manufacturers could implement themselves.
if only they don’t rip people off.. people realized how f***ed up they are and now they are loosing support from gamers.
F***s I give? None. I don’t even have a console anymore but I always felt the “get the game at GameStop early and get bonus content” reel was serious bullshit.
I hate GameStop. Period. But that’s just me. I only buy new and never sell back. I have every game I have ever bought for every system post-NES. I think the idea of forcing people to buy new is complete horsesh*t though. Thankfully all we have is rumor and speculation with no official confirmation. Again, this decision won’t affect me personally, but I have many friends who will be screwed over by it.
No matter what, people will buy the systems still because they are new and exciting. Just like buying the newest Iphone model. But not be able to play a game you bought at a friends house would suck. The only way it would work is to add your playstation account to your friends ps3 and then play it. Then erase your account when you leave.
I don’t understand why people are allowing the Digital market to grow and the physical media market to die. The idea of having a game locked to your account FOREVER that you can not do anything with or trade it for anything is something that I’ve done before, and now regret having a full library of games that I will never play again.
The amount of money that they save, for not having to distribute and package the game is massive, but in return they are only willing to give you a mere $5 off, and in some cases, NOTHING OFF.
Seriously, is it worth paying full price for digital media, that will forever sit linked to your account, and not give you anything else in return when you finish it.
or the Sony and Microsoft continue to force gamer to only buy new games and then the price of games goes down because there is more money now being made by the publishers. I am all for what Sony and Microsoft are trying to do if it means video game prices finally get lowered from $60 down to $40 or less?
Are the new systems even going to have physical discs? Can’t even have used games if there is not a physical disc
I dont know about this….major flaw
#1 at the end of my second or first year I will own over 20 games
and eventually my hard drive will fill up with the games and DLC extras
so ur telling me I’m gonna have either own an endless cloud storage to keep all my games in file accessible
or download each game so I can go back and replay
God damn that alone is a major flaw!
Take that Gamestop!!! No more shall you cheat another!
Doing this as AP. Pfft, whatever…
Ha, gamestop saw that they might loose money.. whether its giving people like me 3$ for a perfectly good copy of Modern Warfare 2..or their entire stash of Pre-owned
Good luck!!!
i got GameStop back
Burn Gamestop burn!!!
