Gates Misquoted About Purchasing Nintendo

Yesterday we reported that Microsoft's Bill Gates was interested in purchasing Nintendo should the company ever be up for sale, apparently this quote was taken out of context.

WirtschaftsWoche, a German financial magazine yesterday reported that Microsoft’s Bill Gates said he would be interested in purchasing the Japanese console maker Nintendo if the company ever came up for sale. Several websites and news services including Gamesindustry.biz and Designtechnica picked up the report.

According to Microsoft, the comments were taken way out of context. When Gates said those remarks, he was at an informal cocktail reception where a few dozen journalists attended. The New York Times is reporting that “Microsoft does not dispute the accuracy of the quotation. But a company official who was standing nearby said that all the context and nuance were lost in translation. Gates’ comment, he said, was meant as an “admiring joke.”"

In any case there can be no doubt that the big “M” would of course be the first in line to purchase the big “N” should Nintendo ever decide to sell. It’s funny what reporters will do to get a big story. Of course it can backfire on them as it has in this case.
