Gears of War 3 sells 3 million in a week to become the biggest game of 2011

If you are an Xbox 360 owner and you’ve been online in the last week, the odds are that you have seen at least a few of your friends playing Gears of War 3. The game is officially a grade-A bona fide hit, but we already knew that—the only question is how big of a hit.

Microsoft has announced that the Xbox 360 exclusive Gears of War 3 has sold more than 3 million copies in its first week, making it the highest grossing game of the year. It also pushed the franchise past the one billion dollar mark, making it the first Xbox 360 franchise to achieve that.

Now, there are two big asterisks on that stat. The first is that Gears 3 is the highest grossing game released in 2011, but Pokemon Black and White on the DS has sold more copies–3.6 million since March in America alone. That game was originally released in Japan last year though, and it costs significantly less as a DS title. The bigger asterisk is for the rest of the year.

With over a dozen major releases due between now and the end of the year, Gears 3 will likely drop a few spots. The smart money is on Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 3 to take the top spot for the year, with several contenders—notably Battlefield 3—jockeying for second place.

Still, asterisk aside, 3 million copies is a major milestone that only a handful of games have reached. And with more and more fans joining the critics in praising the game, those sales totals should continue to climb.

Forget Sonic 1-3, where are my Sonic Game Gear remasters?
Tails rides a boat in Tails Adventure promo art.

This June, Sonic fans will get to relive the series' most iconic games. Sonic Origins features newly remastered editions of the original Sega Genesis trilogy alongside Sonic CD. For video game historians, it’s an important collection that keeps some of gaming’s most fundamental building blocks properly preserved.

Though, it’s not like those games are hard to find. Games like Sonic the Hedgehog 2 have been released and rereleased dozens of times since the 1990s, coming to seemingly every platform imaginable. The same can’t be said for other, less celebrated Sonic games. Case in point: Tails Adventure. When I was thinking about the Game Gear spinoff starring Miles “Tails” Prower recently, I remembered I had to dig up my Nintendo 3DS and rush to the eShop to make sure I downloaded it before it shuts down for good.

Xbox Game Pass adds Madden 22, but loses Titanfall
The Green Bay Packers vs the Minnesota Vikings in Madden NFL 22.

Microsoft revealed on Xbox Wire the Xbox Game Pass titles we can expect in the back half of February. While Total War: Warhammer 3 and Madden NFL 22 are coming to the service, it's an otherwise quiet lineup preceding the removal of some good indie games and the original Titanfall.
Total War: Warhammer III is the latest game in Sega's real-time strategy game series based on the popular board game. The game sits at a score of 87 on review aggregate site Metacritic and is a day one Game Pass title --  but it's only available on the PC version of the service.

The next most notable title is Madden NFL 22. EA's annual football franchise is one of the most popular series in gaming. It will be available through EA Play (an Xbox Game Pass Ultimate bonus) on console and PC.
Outside of that, Xbox Game Pass subscribers can expect a couple of simulation games on console, as well as Alice: Madness Returns on PC and the Mass Effect Legendary Edition on the cloud. Here's the full list of titles joining Xbox Game Pass during the remainder of February:
