"with the Xbox 360 celebrating its eighth anniversary this year"

Clearly says that the eighth anniversary is this year. Consider that dead horse beat.

I actually sort of agree with your comment about gaming in a recession. I totally understand why movies and music do so well and books too, but when I was looking for work a few years ago I played really long games to pass my time and keep my spirits up.

Um.... checking the math on this one.
360 came out in 2005, 6, 7, 8, 9, 10, 11, 12... yup only 7 years, not 8. Putting the PS3 at 6. I agree it's an ungodly long console lifecycle, but that doesn't change the fact that these two systems were released at ungodly high prices when they came out. The only console to hold onto a longer lifecycle was the NeoGeo, which was equally priced, but didn't have the support or remotely affordable games to back up the price of admission.

I've never understood the draw of music and movies over gaming myself. I would prefer to own a game that will offer me hundrads of hours of active gameplay for $50 or now $60 rather than 5-6 hour long movies that I may never choose to watch again.
