Team Ico’s PlayStation 2 games are set to receive an HD makeover and release for the PS3. Both games will be packaged together, and cost $40.

Following the success of the God of War Collection, Sony continues to mine the vast depths of the PlayStation 2 library to re-release old hits with an HD facelift. Next up for the HD conversion will be the Sly Cooper HD Collection, which is tentatively, although unofficially, scheduled for a November 16 release, and according to Kotaku, the next games after that will be Ico and Shadow of the Colossus as a single collection.

If you haven’t played either game, you owe it to yourself to check out both. When Roger Ebert famously (or infamously depending on your point of view) claimed that video games could not be art, both Ico and Shadow of the Colossus were among the top examples used to prove him wrong. Both games released by Team Ico focused on pushing the boundaries of what a game can do, and both are wildly original works that are hard to classify in traditional terms. When both games were originally released, they received huge critical acclaim, but only fair commercial success, which inevitably led to a cult following.

Kotaku is citing a Walmart pre-order as the source of the confirmation, but the games have yet to officially be announced. If the pre-order screen is accurate, the collection will cost $39.99, which is in keeping with the God of War and Sly Collection HD pricing, and it will be released on April 1, 2011.

  6. pjhknk at 4:59am 14th September 2010 Yea but it's in Hd, if you want to play your old games go buy a ps2, furthermore sony needed to cutback on ps3 features in order to stay competitive (the systems re like half the price now). I agree with you though that sony should still have some type oof ps3 model out there with this compatibility at maybe a higher price like 30 bucks more or something.
  7. Damian at 12:08pm 13th September 2010 I officially hate Sony now with regards to their PS3 policies. I actually have one, and played it almost exclusively, rarely touching my Xbox 360 or my Wii, but thanks to their boneheaded decisions, I've stopped using it completely. First, they took away Backwards Compaitibility. Two reasons I can now see. First, is they cited that it would be more expensive on their end to manufacture consoles with BC. Second, clearly now, they plan to re-release all the old PS2 classics, albeit with a HD facelift. Second, was when they dropped Linux. Say what you will about Sony not having to provide free updates, they legally cannot take away a feature of a product you own, post-sale. I wanted to learn how to use Linux, and my PS3 was a great option. Plus, the forcing of updates if I want to use new content. Luckily, I have Internet access. However, what about if I didn't? And I went ahead and bought a new release game to play on my fat, 80GB PS3? Lo, and behold, it wouldn't work! With Sony being so anti-consumer, I wouldn't be surprised if a future firmware update removes the ability to play PS1 discs, so they can force you to buy the same game again through the Playstation Network. Oh, sh*t, maybe I shouldn't have given them that idea!

Say what you will about Sony not having to provide free updates, they legally cannot take away a feature of a product you own, post-sale. " Ya might want to check out those EULA things when you buy the system. It counts as a legal contract between you and Sony; and the vast majority of such things say they can do whatever in the updates that they want (just in legaleese). At least with Sony, last I checked, you still own the hardware, just not the software side of the OS. If you buy something from, say, Apple; you technically don't even own the hardware. According to their EULA you're just renting the whole thing from them with a one time rental payment. As for the PS2 backwards compatibility: It was a two-front decision. One was the "hey we can rerelease stuff if we get rid of it". The other was that the PS2 emulator board was causing heat control issues if used for an extended period of time; so they took that whole board out after about the 2nd or so production run of the original bigger-than-xbox-sized consoles (kinda similar to 360's redring issues).
