Insomniac Games asks players to ‘dive deeper’ in new teaser

Developer Insomniac Games released a mysterious trailer Tuesday teasing the upcoming announcement of the studio’s new project later this week.

The trailer, simply called “What’s Next?,” depicts the underwater ruins of a technologically advanced but aesthetically medieval civilization, animated in a hand-drawn art style. The camera descends throughout the trailer, showing undersea rock faces laced with moving gears and pipes, statues of stone faces, and sunken ships. Also, there are a lot of jellyfish.

The trailer announced that Insomniac will make a larger announcement about the game on Thursday, January 28, at 9:30 am ET. The trailer ends with the phrase “dive deeper.” The teaser does not feature any obvious connections to a game from the studio’s past.

Best known for its work on two of PlayStation’s long-standing first-party franchises, Ratchet and Clank and Resistance, Insomniac has moved toward working with other publishers in recent years, including 2014 Xbox One shooter Sunset Overdrive. Insomniac is currently working on two projects; a game based on the upcoming Ratchet and Clank animated movie, which will come out after the film opens in April, 2016, and Edge of Nowhere, an Oculus Rift-exclusive third-person adventure game involving arctic explorers who try to evade vaguely Lovecraftian monsters.

On popular gaming forum NeoGAF, gamers and fans have already started speculating on what the upcoming game might be. Predictions and hopes run the gamut, from a “2D point-and-click adventure,” to “a new AAA IP.” Of course, fans are also throwing out underwater puns for every possible sequel as well, such as “Resistance 4: Under Water,” and “Sunset Aquadrive.” Someone even suggested the trailer could be for “Fuse 2.”

We’ll keep an eye out and let you know what Insomniac is up to when they break the news Thursday morning.

You need to try this new, adrenaline-fueled Xbox Game Pass highlight
A ball zips up a ramp in Go Mecha Ball.

It's going to be a busy year for Xbox Game Pass subscribers. The subscription service is expected to get an influx of high-profile games in 2024. Senua's Saga: Hellblade 2 and Avowed are leading the charge, and there's a good chance that we'll see a lot of Activision Blizzard games on the service soon. What's always more exciting to me, though, are the games I've never heard of. Some of my favorite Game Pass titles over the year have been left-field indies that I learned about the very day they launched. Call them pleasant surprises.

Xbox Game Pass is already getting one of those games this week. Go Mecha Ball is a new roguelike, twin-stick shooter hybrid that launches on January 25 for both PC and Xbox Game Pass. It's a wildly creative little action game that makes it the kind of Game Pass curiosity that keeps me subscribed to the service.

Steam has a new hit game, and it’s Pokémon with guns
A giant pal uses a minigun in Palworld.

Steam's latest viral hit is Pocketpair's Palworld, a game that the internet has deemed Pokémon with guns.

Palworld is an open-world survival crafting game that layers a "Pal" creature collecting system clearly influenced by Pokémon on top of all that. It launched into early access on PC and Xbox Game Preview on Xbox Series X/S today, and it's clearly already a massive hit on Valve's PC storefront and launcher.

We got everything from big success stories like Baldur's Gate 3 and The Legend of Zelda: Tears of the Kingdom to memorable indies in Venba and Chants of Sennaar. The most notable gaming news stories of 2023 run the gamut from genuinely exciting to thoroughly disappointed. That speaks to a video game industry bound to head into an odd 2024 that lacks the known quantity bombshells of this year and continues to reel from layoffs. In last year's iteration of this article, my editor said that the 2020s are shaping up to be "the most pivotal decade in gaming history when all is said and done." If this year is anything to go by, that will almost certainly be true. These were the gaming stories that defined 2023, for better and much worse.
