Is Sony Planning to Debut the PSP2 at E3?

Industry Insiders think Sony could be unveiling the PSP2 at this years E3 show.

The lineup at E3 is beginning to take shape; we are expecting a big push for the Natal, Playstation’s Move will be everywhere, and Nintendo will be showing off the Nintendo 3DS. But if a new rumor turns out to be true, Sony may just steal the show.

MCV is reporting that industry insiders are hinting at something big coming from Sony, and at least one publisher is waiting on a new announcement before unveiling its plans for the PSP.  This is still all speculation, but it makes sense that Sony would at least announce, if not fully unveil the PSP2 at this time.

The PSP has done fair since its release six years ago, but not spectacular. The unit recently hit the 60 million mark in sales, but compared to the Nintendo DS, which has sold 129 million units, the PSP is at risk of being relegated to the bargain bins. Add in the small, but growing gaming market on the iPhone, iPad, and other mobile devices, and the PSP2 needs to be something extraordinary.

Rumors about the PSP2 have been flying for quite some time now, and nearly a year ago, supposed details of the PSP2’s specs leaked out. If true, the handheld would rival the original Xbox in power, which makes sense, as the PSP was comparable to the PS1 in terms of power. Again, these are all rumors- even the concept picture of the PSP2 from above is unconfirmed, but the timetable, the possible specsmentioned, and the upcoming venue of E3 make it all very possible that Sony has a surprise for us all.
