Konami Drops Six Days In Fallujah Game

Game publisher Konami has backed away from its plan to issue a video game based on the Second Battle of Fallujah in Iraq.

Following a wave of protest in the US, Konami has dropped plans to publish a documentary-style shooting game based on the Second Battle of Fallujah in Iraq, to have been made by Atomic Games. The main character would have been a US troop in the battle.

Konami reportedly told Asahi Shimbun:

"After seeing the reaction to the videogame in the United States and hearing opinions sent through phone calls and e-mail, we decided several days ago not to sell it. We had intended to convey the reality of the battles to players so that they could feel what it was like to be there."

The Wall Street Journal reported that a number of US marines had been interviewed for the game. The game was to be based on the battle that happened in late 2004 between US and Iraqi troops in the Iraqi city of Fallujah that ended with around 2,000 people, most of them civilians, dead.

Meanwhile, Atomic hasn’t said whether it will seek a new publisher for the title, which was due in 2010, according to The Register.
