Motley Crue to Release Single via Rock Band

Bad-boy rockers Motley Crue are slated to become the first group to release a new single through the video game Rock Band.

Bad-boy rockers Mötley Crüe (yes, we’re going with the umlauts) are set to become the first group to release a single through the video game Rock Band, with the song “Saints of Los Angeles” from their upcoming album slated to be available to music fans for $0.99. The song will go on sale today through Microsoft’s Xbox Live Marketplace today, and debut this Thursday via Sony’s PlayStation Store.

Mötley Crüe is also set to announce further details of their new album at a Hollywood press event Tuesday.

It might seem like a long way from “Shout at the Devil,” to “Shout at the Television,” but the Crüe’s is going to get some immediate competition on the release-a-single-via-a-video-game front: fellow veteran hair-rockers Def Leppard as slated to release their single “Nine Lives” through rival game Guitar Hero beginning April 24. Guitar Hero publishers are also working on an entirely new edition of the game centered on the band Aerosmith.

Rock Band launched last November to skepticism gamers would be willing to spend roughly $170 for a video game and its custom controllers (including a mic, guitars, and a drum kit) but the game has proven surprisingly popular, and now offers more than 80 music tracks for download in addition to the original 58 tracks included in the game. MTV GAmes says players have purchased more than 6 million tracks for Rock Band.
