New tech is great but how much will it cost to make a PlayStation 4 game?

OLYMPUS DIGITAL CAMERAWhen announcing a new game console like the PlayStation 4, giant corporations like Sony need to convince developers that the machine is worth their while well before they try to convince game players. It costs a whole lot of money to make a video game even for independent developers, and with the introduction of new, more computationally intensive games (better graphics, artificial intelligence, physics, etc.), that cost naturally grows. That’s why Sony was so quick to emphasize how developer-friendly the PlayStation 4 architecture is during its Wednesday night press conference. Just because the console offers a lot of horsepower and accessibility to developers though, doesn’t mean it’s cheap to develop games for. The rising costs of development during the last transition drowned many console developers, from Midway to Atari. Will the spike in costs on PS4 be as dramatic?

“It’s not as scary as some people led you to believe,” said Guerilla Games’ managing director Herman Hulst during a Sony developer roundtable on Wednesday. Discussing his studio’s work on Killzone: Shadow Fall, Hulst said that Guerilla’s development team on PS4 is 150 people. The staff working on Killzone 1 for PlayStation 2 and Killzone 2 for PlayStation 3 topped out at 125 people.

Motorstorm creator Evolution Studios also announced the PS4 racing game Driveclub. Evolution’s Matt Southern echoed Hulst explaining that his team has only grown slightly. “We’ve got about 110 on our team,” said Southern, “It was a very small incremental increase.”

Neither developer put a dollar number on their projects, though. They also have the benefit of direct backing from Sony, meaning access to corporate resources other studios won’t.

During the PlayStation 2 console cycle, the average console game cost between $5 and $10 million to develop, a steep increase from the $800,000 to $1.7 million cost of developing for the original PlayStation. The average PlayStation 3 game, meanwhile, costs between $18.8 million and $28.2 million to develop. Even a small increase in costs can be significant.

To date, big game makers have been cagey about how much development costs would spike on new consoles. Take-Two Interactive boss Strauss Zelnick said that PS4 and Xbox 720 development would not “be a whole lot more expensive” than current consoles. That’s a world of difference from Tim Sweeney of Epic Games’ prediction that development costs would double.

Developers will learn more about the costs of PS4 development over the coming years. Hopefully increased costs won’t translate to even higher game prices for players.

PlayStation Plus is the perfect stocking stuffer for RPG fans this year
Yuffie holding three materia in FF7 Remake Intergrade.

I thought I had my fill of gaming subscription services. PlayStation Plus's price increase turned me off and the offerings of Xbox Game Pass never fit my fancy. While both of these have their positives, I've never been one to just drop so much money every month for a bunch of games I don't really care about. That was until I jumped into my yearly Christmas-time RPG mood and discovered the bounty of classics that's built up on PS Plus.

Sony’s new PlayStation earbuds are a perfect match — for my Nintendo Switch
Sony's Pulse Explore earbuds sit next to a Nintendo Switch OLED.

If you’re the kind of PlayStation loyalist who buys every add-on Sony puts out, 2023 may have been a pricey year for you. We’ve gotten the DualSense Edge, PlayStation VR2, a brand new PS5 model, and the PlayStation Portal -- but that’s not all. Sony is refreshing its audio offerings on top of all that, starting with the Pulse Explore next month.

Sony’s new wireless earbuds are built with PlayStation devices in mind. They use a new PlayStation Link connection system, which is built to easily pair them with the PlayStation 5. That tech actually replaces Bluetooth entirely on the new PlayStation Portal, which means that the Pulse Explore will be one of the only ways to get wireless audio on the handheld this year. It’s a sign that Sony is getting more aggressive about building a dedicated PlayStation ecosystem, Apple-style. It doesn’t just want you to buy Sony consoles, but all of the black-and-white accessories that go with them too.

Horizon Forbidden West is the next PlayStation game to make its way to PC
Aloy swimming underwater.

PlayStation and Nixxes Software have confirmed that Horizon Forbidden West: Complete Edition will be the next PlayStation 5 first-party game to come to PC. While it's not releasing on PC until sometime next year, Horizon Forbidden West: Complete Edition will drop on PS5 first on October 6.

Over the past few years, several previously PlayStation console-exclusive titles have made their way to PC. Games that made the transition include God of War, Marvel's Spider-Man Remastered and Marvel's Spider-Man: Miles Morales, Uncharted: Legacy of Thieves Collection, Sackboy: A Big Adventure, Returnal, The Last of Us Part 1, and Ratchet & Clank: Rift Apart. Horizon Forbidden West was first released for PS4 and PS5 in February 2022, and will make the jump to PC about two years after launch in early 2024. We don't know what technical improvements this PC port will have yet, but we do know that it'll be available across Steam and the Epic Games Store for $60.
Nixxes Software and Sony also confirmed that it would be the Complete Edition of the game that comes to PC. Announced alongside this port, Horizon Forbidden West: Complete Edition comes with the base game, April 2023's Burning Shores DLC, a digital soundtrack and art book, a special pose and face paint for photo mode, and additional in-game items like outfits, bows, slings, and resources. It launches on October 6, so that'll be the best time to jump in for PS5 players who have been waiting to get Horizon Forbidden West.
