Newest Need for Speed Title Hits The Track

EA can skip the disclaimer about illegal street racing on Need for Speed: ProStreet. It leaves the streets behind to put players back on closed courses.

After scores of urban tuner racing games released under the Need for Speed moniker, Electronic Arts is switching gears to offer something slightly different. Need for Speed: ProStreet will put players back in the seats of hot imports and muscle cars, but ditch the city setting for good old-fashioned racetracks.

Need for Speed ProStreet accelerates street racing culture by providing the ultimate stage for the pursuit of street racing supremacy,” said executive producer Larry LaPierre, in a statement. “This is a game about building the ultimate performance-tuned battle machine, taking it to multi-disciplinary showdowns all over the world and pitting your skills and reputation against the very best street racers.”

All of the Need for Speed staples will still be there, including the Autosculpt car customization features that allow players to completely alter the appearance of their in-game rides. However, clumsy drivers had better get used to paying for their mistakes with a new damage system which will leave dents, scratches and crumples on cars. Online play will also be available.

The game is being developed by EA Black Box in Vancouver, B.C. for Xbox 360, Playstation 3, Playstation 2, PSP, and the Nintendo Wii and DS. It will be released in November.
