Nintendo 3DS hits four-million mark in US sales, outpaces Wii in first nine months

Nintendo-3DSNintendo has overcome some early troubles with its handheld gaming console to sell over four million Nintendo 3DS units in the US and beat the nine-month mark set by the Nintendo Wii.

The company announced the sales milestone this week, and paired it with an announcement that multiple 3DS titles — including Super Mario 3D Land and Mario Kart 7 — broke sales records for their respective franchises. The two games are the first 3DS titles to sell over 1 million units in the US.

While the sales figures mean the glasses-free 3D gaming system sold faster than the Wii, the latter was the top-selling Nintendo console in the US, with 4.5 million Wii consoles sold in 2011.

Of course, it’s worth pointing out that the 3DS and Wii aren’t the only Nintendo consoles in play (pun totally intended) in the US, as the Nintendo DS continues to post strong sales. More than 3.4 million of the non-3D handheld system were sold in the US last year, and the total number of consoles currently in circulation favors the DS (51 million) over the Wii (39 million).
