Nintendo DS Sales Top 5 Mln in Japan

Japanese sales of the Nintendo DS have topped 5 million units in Japan in less than 13 months, the fastest pace ever for a video game.

Sales of Nintendo‘s portable Nintendo DS game system have topped 5 million units in Japan less than 13 months after introduction, setting a new record for the fastest launch of a video game system in the Japanese market.

In comparison, Nintendo’s earlier Game Boy Advance took 14 months to sell 5 million units, and Sony’s PlayStation 2 took 17 months.

Japanese sales of Nintendogs, a game where players care for and interact with virtual pets, has topped 1 million units.

In addition to targeting the traditionally young-and-male video game market, Nintendo is known for creating games which appeal to adults, women, and seniors in an effort to broaden the appeal of its gaming platforms.
