Last we heard, the next Xbox console was speculated to debut in 2015, but a new report from Kotaku claims that PlayStation and Xbox are aiming for 2014. “Industry sources” say that Sony and Microsoft are both planning to squeeze as much life out the PS3 and Xbox 360 as possible before introducing the next generation versions.
Does three years feel like an eternity to you? Maybe – the Xbox 360 was introduced in 2005, and the PS3 in 2006. Both consoles are just now hitting their strides with new software that is pushing the hardware to its limits, but both systems may start showing their age sooner rather than later. So for those that are ready for the next-gen, the good news is that an insider said 2013 isn’t out of the picture, but only if one of them “feels pushed.” There is also a chance that a 2013 product launch for Microsoft could be a “Kinect-upgraded 360,” followed by the upgraded console the next year. PlayStation gamers have no such luck with an earlier upgrade: Spokesperson Patrick Seybold said Sony PlayStation is “laser-focused” on its existing lineup and coming handheld device.
If it’s any comfort, the wait should be worth it. While it appears that both companies are trying to eke every last dollar out of their current models, they aren’t entirely trying to torture their loyal gamers. Microsoft and Sony are likely both focused on taking big steps with a new device, delivering noticeably advanced technology and entirely new features for their consoles. Details about either machine are still relatively unknown, although there have been whispers about an Xbox 720, that could feature Blu-ray capability and 3D.
This is all good news for Nintendo, which would have the attention all to itself and the Wii 2 at E3 this year – not to mention the lack of competition for the new console when (can we say “when” yet?) it appears on shelves in 2012.
I honestly believe that it will TAKE them 3 years to come up with something new. I feel like it’s all been done before–what could possibly be next?
This is a good thing IMO since both the PS3 and 360 still have so much untapped potential yet. Besides I also agree that shelling out several hundred bucks 2 or 3 times every 4 or 5 years is a major inconvience. So I am more than willing to wait a few more years yet for new hardware.
totally agree shelling out money for the next new thing is a major incoveince
I might actually be able to save up enough $$ to pay for either one, by then..

According to both Sony and Microsoft prior to the release of both current generation systems they both declared that it would at the very least take upwards of up to possibly ten years before they considered making a new console. After Nintendo dropped a bombshell earlier this week about an up coming new system, what do you think the competition is going to do, sit there with their hands up each others skirts? I think not. Is it time for another $400-700 piece of hardware, I say no.

Sorry Josh, I disagree. These consoles are now 6/7yrs old. What other piece of home entertainment would last that long? The only difference from previous consoles is that the visuals are finally at such a level where people are no longer anticipating the nxt step up.
Also, it’s been said that there’ll be NO new games franchises set up untill the nxt lot of consoles. The industry thrives on new ideas and at the moment, no one is willing to pit the money down to back them. Instead, going for the easy dollar and knocking out another sequel.
I think that the next generation is 2013-2014 no later. There is a lot of evidence which can even point you at the technologies which are likely to be in the next systems. With Wii-U out soon they won’t wait forever they will get out onto the market as soon as they can without losing their target features. People seem to be complaining about having to upgrade so soon, but if you are really thinking this is soon it just means you are late to the party. Computer technology just doesn’t stay modern or functional that long. I think this generation will overall have less new functions or features and will mostly be a specs upgrade and interactivity upgrade. More functional better designed operation systems, better overall internet functionality with new better ways to buy, download, and experience all forms of content.

Hmmm…well I wonder which console will have the most games I care about. I liked more 360 games, but PlayStation might have more games I care about such as Fighting games…
The current console generation has serious legs, so we have years to go before we should even consider another. The manufacturers have to figure out how they want the hardware to interact with firmware as well as software now, thanks to the success of online networking, and that’s going to hold things back a while in itself. Account for the technical changes and the economic situation, and we’re looking at no earlier than 2020 before we’re seriously going to see the successors to the current three console platforms.
Let the console wars resume.

good. I dont like buying a console. Then getting a crap ton of games for it only to have a new console com out a year or two later. companies should just worry about bringing out quality games instead of new consoles.
