PlayStation 3 to Offer Parental Controls

The Entertainment Software Association says Sony plans to parental controls for the PlayStation 3, making it the last major console maker to promise built-in content restriction.

The Entertainment Software Association says Sony plans to integrate parental controls into its forthcoming PlayStation 3 gaming console, making the company the last of the major console makers to sign on to integrating content controls in to game units. Microsoft shipped parental controls in its just-debuts Xbox 360 console and Xbox Live online service, and in October Nintendo announced it planned to include parental controls in its forthcoming Revolution console.

Parental controls let users limit players’ access to video games and DVD based on the ratings such as those given by the Entertainment Software Ratings Board (ESRB). Using the controls, parents could prevent consoles from playing games or viewing content carrying particular ratings, such as “T” for teen and “M” for Mature.

The video game industry faces increasing scrutiny from parents and watchdog groups

  3. Ian Bell and Dan Gaul at 1:43pm 13th December 2005 Andy, maybe I am reading your posts wrong, but you are contradicting yourself by saying video game violence isn't that bad, and then by saying the government should ban the violence.
  4. andy at 1:33pm 13th December 2005 I strongly believe that the government should continue and ban violence in games.
  5. Sniper at 3:29pm 28th November 2005 Parental Controls? Parents can't do it themselves? Why do people blame games.. why can't they blame themselves?
  6. andy ribaudo at 2:48pm 28th November 2005 Why do adults have to be so protective? Videogames are just another form of entertainment. just like t.v, radio, movies, and anyother you can think of. Why does anyone have the right to tell another person how they want to entertain themeselves? Would you rather have your kids play with a real gun or kill non-living, animated pictures moving across the screen?
