Sony’s big keynote address at PlayStation Experience ran well into a third hour, and it was wall-to-wall with announcements and reveals. Like an extra-strength E3 press conference, Sony trotted out a parade of crowd-pleasing items, from a world’s-first look at Uncharted 4: A Thief’s End gameplay to the news that PlayStation 4 is the only console that Street Fighter V will ever appear on.

What you’re reading right now is a one-stop shop to all of Sony’s PSX keynote revelations, large and small. Follow the links to look closer at each big news item of the show, and cruise through galleries of the various trailers, broken down by platform.

David Jaffe is back with Drawn to Death

Sony teased a new project from Twisted Metal creator and God of War creative lead David Jaffe in the weeks leading up to PlayStation Experience, and Drawn to Death is it. It’s a multiplayer shooter with a stylish twist: All of the action plays out on the pages of a notebook scrawled with the doodles of a high schooler.

Check out the sweetass trailer:

Players choose their own sketchbook character before being dropped into a series of combat arenas brimming with the sort of bizarre sights that you’d expect from a bored teen’s doodlings. The gameplay may draw from familiar places, but the style that’s draped around it is one of the most unique and eye-catching that we’ve seen.

Drawn to Death is the product of a collaboration between Sony’s San Diego studio and Jaffe’s own Bartlet Jones Supernatural Detective Agency. There’s no release date yet, but you can find a few more details in Jaffe’s PlayStation Blog post and sign up for upcoming beta on the game’s official website.

Kill Strain is an online shooter from Sony’s San Diego Studio

One of the more mysterious reveals of PlayStation Experience was Kill Strain, which was the subject of a trailer-less announcement from Sony’s San Diego Studio. It’s described as a top-down competitive shooter that uses a unique 5v2v5 breakdown of teams, though allegiances can apparently change quickly in the game. The art below, from the game’s website, is about the only thing we’ve seen so far.

A closer look at the website reveals a handful of facts about Kill Strain. The game’s frozen tundra setting serves as the backdrop for a conflict in which factions wage battles for control of a mysterious energy source and the globe-spanning outbreak it threatens to trigger. It seems that this energy source is capable of transforming humans into mutated monsters, like the ones seen above.

The website offers few specific details beyond that. It looks like the factions split primarily between human mercenaries and mutant beasties, but there’s some hint that they can team up as well, possibly in a way that leads to the “2” portion of the game’s 5v2v5 team breakdown.

A beta is expected to launch in early 2015, and you can sign up now on Kill Strain‘s website.

Yet another dazzling trailer for No Man’s Sky

Sure, we could have lumped this brand new trailer for Hello Games’ No Man’s Sky in with the rest. But the open galaxy space exploration game continues to look like it’s going to deliver one of the most exciting and fresh interactive experiences of 2015.

Hype levels are very high, perhaps alarmingly so, but it’s hard to set excitement aside after every new look at the game’s randomly generated universe. Just take a peek at Hello’s latest trailer.

The new look came less than 24 hours after a new trailer for No Man’s Sky premiered at the 2014 Game Awards. There’s still no release date announced for the game, but it is expected to arrive in 2015.

PlayStation 4: News & Trailers

There’s lots of stuff to go through here. We’ll note where it’s appropriate when a particular game is also coming to other PlayStation platforms, and we’ll give you a little context for each trailer you’re seeing.

Street Fighter V – gameplay trailer

Here’s your first look at the gameplay in Street Fighter V, which is said to be built from the ground up specifically for PlayStation 4. It ought to look familiar to fans of Street Fighter IV, as the art style appears to be very similar. Capcom will certainly have more details to share in the coming months,

Until Dawn – teaser trailer

Supermassive Games’ Until Dawn is a horror game with a unique twist. It follows a group of characters as they contend with a mask-wearing psychopath, but the choices you make — spurred by a graphical user interface that seems inspired by Quantic Dreams efforts like Beyond: Two Souls — determine who lives and dies in the heavily branching storyline. We’ve seen approaches like this before (thanks, Telltale Games!), but Until Dawn‘s horror trappings help it to stand out.

There’s no release date yet, but Until Dawn is expected to arrive for PlayStation 4 in summer 2015.

Enter the Gungeon – reveal trailer

Publisher Devolver Digital’s Enter the Gungeon is a “gunfighting dungeon crawler” with a bananas premise: You, one of several Gungeoneers, set out into the Gungeon where you face off against Cult of the Gundead in pursuit of a big prize: The gun that can kill the past.

There are plenty of other guns along the way. We’ll let the press release speak for itself here: Unlock “a variety of fantastical weapons that unleash everything from missiles, lasers and cannonballs to bizarrely effect a volley of rainbows, fish, foam darts and bees.”

Good times.

MLB 15: The Show – trailer

MLB 15: The Show is coming to PlayStation 4, PlayStation 3, and PS Vita on March 31, 2015. Along with the above trailer, that’s about the only thing Sony revealed regarding its exclusive licensed baseball sim.

Orcs Must Die! Unchained – announcement trailer

The third entry in Robot Entertainment’s Orcs Must Die series, Unchained evolves the tower defense focus of the previous two games. The shift establishes the upcoming game as something closer to a MOBA (a la League of Legends), with 5v5 competitive gameplay.

In addition to PlayStation 4, Orcs Must Die! Unchained is also coming to Windows platforms.

Darkest Dungeon – teaser trailer

Darkest Dungeon is a side-scrolling, turn-based role-playing game in which a four-hero team plumbs the depths of… well, a dark dungeon. Torches play a key role in the gameplay, with the ever-dimming light impacting the dangers that greet the heroes. There’s also an affliction system that affects each character differently, based on their current stress level.

The game’s teaser doesn’t explore any of this in detail, but you can get a lot more info from the game’s official websiteDarkest Dungeon heads to Linux, Mac, and Windows in addition to PlayStation 4, in 2015.

The Forest – announcement trailer

Already available for Windows via Steam’s early access program, The Forest is a survival horror game in which you, the only one left alive after a plane crash, must cope with the dangers of a vast forest populated by cannibalistic mutants. Seemingly less structured and more open ended than games like Resident Evil or Silent Hill, The Forest encourages players to explore the world and carve out their own place within it.

You can of course check out The Forest right now if you’ve got a Windows machine capable of running it. Check out developer Endnight Games’ official website for more details. The Forest comes to PlayStation 4 in 2015.

 Skytorn – trailer

Skytorn rises above the gaming industry’s apparent love for post-apocalyptic settings… quite literally. Noel Berry and his small team have built in Skytorn a procedurally generated action game set in the skies high above our ruined planet. Humanity dwells in the clouds, zipping around in airships and searching ruins for artifacts and survivors.

Find more details on Skytorn‘s official website. The game is coming to PlayStation 4 and Windows first, with Mac and Linux releases to follow at a later date.

Grim Fandango Remastered – trailer

The LucasArts classic is back! Double Fine creative director Tim Schafer revealed during the keynote that the highly anticipated re-release of his decades-old game is set for release on PlayStation 4 and PS Vita on January 27, 2015.

But wait! There’s more! Schafer also confirmed that the next old-school-game-gets-remastered project for Double Fine is none other than Maniac Mansion sequel, Day of the Tentacle. That “special edition” release will be coming to PS4 and Vita too.

And one more thing: Broken Age, the game that propelled Double Fine’s first major Kickstarter success, will also be coming to PS4 and Vita. There’s no date confirmed, but Schafer noted that the release will be day and date with the launch of Broken Age‘s second act, due in 2015.

Fat Princess Adventures – announcement trailer

Santa Monica Studio takes the Fat Princess series in a slightly new direction with Fat Princess Adventures. The game embraces four-player co-op dungeon-crawling action, with all of it framed by the whimsical personality that’s so integral to the series.

Wattam – announcement trailer

Wattam is another Santa Monica Studio effort, this one sprung from the mind of Katamari Damacy and Noby Noby Boy creator Keita Takahashi. Predictably, it’s a weird one. Best to just read the trailer description that Sony included on YouTube:

From the criminal mastermind behind Noby Noby Boy and Katamari Damacy comes Wattam – a unique, charming world bursting with interesting people, overseen by the Mayor and his trusted Deputies. Look for more details on this extremely fresh, 3D action game with interactive sound, throughout 2015!

What Remains of Edith Finch – announcement trailer

What Remains of Edith Finch is a collaboration between Santa Monica Studio and Giant Sparrow, the folks behind The Unfinished Swan. There’s not a lot to say about this one, but it sure looks intriguing. And Giant Sparrow did a killer job with Swan. Stay tuned for more details in the new year.

Tearaway: Unfolded – trailer

Here’s a fresh look at LittleBigPlanet developer Media Molecule’s upcoming Tearaway: Unfolded. Is it a port? A special edition? A remake? Tearaway was first released for PS Vita in late 2013, and Unfolded is a little bit of all of those things. It’s similar in a lot of ways to the Vita game, but it draws on new ideas and gameplay mechanisms enabled by the jump to PlayStation 4.

Gang Beasts – trailer

Based purely on what we see in the above trailer, Double Fine’s Gang Beasts is a physics sandbox built for devising horrible ways to murder colorful critters. In truth, it’s a fighting game, but one propelled by the same awkward-controls-as-hilarious-fun design philosophy that’s propelled the success of titles like Surgeon Simulator and Octodad: Dadliest Catch.

The Order: 1866 – gameplay

Sony’s shown a lot of story-teasing content for The Order: 1866, but there’s been precious little gameplay. That all changes with the above video, which highlights just how much The Order draws inspiration from lumbering cover-based shooters like Gears of War. It’s a gorgeous game, set in a steampunk-meets-supernatural take on Victorian-era London, and it promises to be one of the big ticket blockbusters for PlayStation 4 in 2015.

Killing Floor 2 – announcement trailer

Tripwire Interactive’s Killing Floor started life as an Unreal Tournament 2004 mod, first released in 2005. The studio revealed plans for a sequel to the cooperative, wave-based zombie survival action earlier in 2014, and Sony now confirms that the game will be coming to PlayStation 4 in addition to the previously announced SteamOS and Windows releases.

PlayStation Vita: News & Trailers

The bulk of Sony’s PlayStation Experience announcements centered on PlayStation 4, but the handheld PS Vita wasn’t exactly ignored. Read on for a rundown of everything Vita-related that emerged from the show.

Severed – gameplay trailer

Severed is the next game from DrinkBox Studios, the team behind the wonderful PS Vita launch title Tales from Space: Mutant Blobs Attack. It’s a slick-looking non-linear RPG-lite played from a first-person perspective and featuring swipe-based combat (think Infinity Blade) that should pair well with the Vita’s unique touch controls.

Bastion – trailer

Supergiant Games has released Bastion for virtually every platform imaginable at this point, so what’s two more added to the pile? The wonderful action-RPG is coming to both PlayStation 4 and PS Vita in 2015. If past ports are any indication, expect no enhancements beyond control tweaks. Not that there’s anything wrong with that.

Super Time Force Ultra – trailer

Super Time Force is already out on Windows and Xbox platforms, but the spring 2015 PlayStation 4 and PS Vita release of Super Time Force Ultra adds something… special. Just watch the trailer.

Sony’s own Shuhei Yoshida, president of Worldwide Studios, joins the time-spinning game as one of its many playable characters. Even better, in a cheeky nod to Shu’s prolific social media presence, the virtual Sony exec smites the evil denizens of the past, present, and future using weaponized tweets.

News Blips

The PlayStation Experience keynote didn’t just bring an onslaught of trailers. There’s also a whole bunch of news that’s worth noting, even if it doesn’t have a eye candy to go along with it. Here’s what you might have missed if you only perused the trailers:

  • Double Fine will release Broken Age for PS Vita and PS4 in 2015, and the release will arrive day and date with the launch of the game’s second act for platforms it was previously released on.
  • Double Fine also announced a special edition remake of the LucasArts classic, Day of the Tentacle, for Vita and PS4. No word on release date.
  • A number of other notable games are also now announced for a Vita release: Geometry Wars 3: Dimensions (spring 2015), Suikoden 1 2 (December 2014), Octodad: Dadliest CatchThe Banner SagaTowerFall Ascension (and its expansion), Resident Evil: Revelations 2 (spring 2015)

PlayStation 3: News & Trailers

There was predictably little news at PSX relating to PlayStation 3, but fans of Sony’s previous-gen console weren’t completely ignored.

Yakuza 5 – announcement trailer

At long last, Sega is bringing Yakuza 5, a December 2012 PS3 release in Japan, to North America. It’s coming sometime in 2015. For those not familiar with the series, Yakuza takes a page from Grand Theft Auto’s open world crime dramas, but gives it a uniquely Eastern twist with diversions and minigames — not to mention a story — that are more appropriate to the game’s urban Japan setting.

The announcement also brought word that Sega will release Yakuza 4 and Yakuza: Dead Souls in the PlayStation Store in December 2014. Yakuza 5, on the other hand, is coming in 2015. All three games are only coming to PS3.

Shovel Knight – teaser

Yacht Club Games launched Shovel Knight earlier in 2014 for Nintendo 3DS and Wii U, plus Linux, Mac, and Windows, and now it’s confirmed for PS3, PS4, and PS Vita as well. And, as you can see in the trailer above, a certain familiar face from a popular Sony franchise makes an appearance.

Sony’s latest partnership is a big move for PlayStation’s mobile future
A PS5 sits on a table.

Sony Interactive Entertainment (SIE) revealed its next big gaming partnership, and it's with a somewhat unexpected company. The game developer and publisher in question is NCSoft, a Korean company best known for its work on MMO series, namely Guild Wars and Lineage.

According to a press release, the two companies have entered into a partnership that enables them to "collaborate in various global business fields, including mobile." We asked Sony if the phrasing of "various global business fields" also applied to console games, but a representative for the company said it doesn't have anything else to share on that front currently.

The new 1TB PS5 has more usable storage space than the Xbox Series X
The new slimmer PS5 models.

It's out with the old and in with the new for the PlayStation 5, as Sony has replaced its old 2020 model with a slimmer redesign. The new model fixes one of its predecessor's biggest issues thanks to its 1TB storage upgrade. As is the case with any console, not all of that space is actually usable. In testing our own review unit, we've been able to break down just how much of an upgrade it actually is.

When popping into the storage menu, the new PS5 says it has 848GB of space. You'll find that some of that is already taken up by a few things, including Astro's Playroom, which comes installed on the system out the box. That'll leave you with 830.6GB, though you can delete the game to get 11.06GB back. The only thing you can't cut is 6.33GB of system files. All in all, that means you have roughly 842.2GB of usable space.
