Sony is a bit behind the curve when it comes to the online side of the PlayStation 3. Yes, Sony fans, it is still a great online experience, and the people are fantastic, and the console is better, etc., etc., but the sad fact is that Sony is playing catch-up with Microsoft. The Xbox 360 has been airing video clips for years, has a full selection of music and videos to rent and buy, has begun to broadcast ESPN on Xbox Live (and also just announced that it will even be airing most of the Bowl games, including the national championship), and it is even discussing bringing a premium channel online. The PS3 hardware may be better, but the Xbox currently owns the online side. Search your feelings, PlayStation fan, you know it to be true.
But while Sony can sometimes take time to get to a conclusion, it eventually figures it out. Earlier this year, Sony began investing heavily in the future of the PlayStation Network. A yearly fee was initiated for an upgraded service, more video content—including exclusive programs like the Tester—became available, and much more was promised in the future. So far the results have not borne fruit in terms of cash for Sony, but that seems to be changing, and by next year the PSN could be turning a profit. By 2012, that profit margin could be in the billions.
In an interview with Reuters Japan (which was then translated and recounted by 1up.com), Sony Computer Entertainment President Kaz Hirai said that PSN sales in 2009 were approximately $434.3 million, and in 2010, that number nearly doubled. Next year that number is expected to nearly double again, putting the total sales into the billion dollar range, and by 2012, Sony expects the PSN to pull in around $3.6 billion in total sales.
Now, these numbers are coming from Sony itself, so the projections might be putting a heavy emphasis on internal confidence as much as anything, but there are figures to back up their optimism. Last month, the total number of PSN accounts topped 60 million. With December typically being one of the busiest sales months, that number could see a significant boost. There is also the fact that many analysts have predicted that thanks to the price cuts, the greater acceptance of blu-ray, and the growing list of exclusive titles, the PlayStation 3 could overtake the Xbox 360 as the second best selling console behind the Wii– so the projections are themselves based on projections.
For now PSN is still in the red, but it seems like Sony is finally catching up to its video game competitors. But playing catch up is something that Sony is used to by now. From the first day of its launch, the PlayStation 3 has been a hardware behemoth. It is by far the most powerful of the three major consoles, it has a blu-ray player built in, and of the three, Sony has the biggest global reach. And yet the PS3 continued to see lower than expected sales, lost money on each unit sold until recently, and still remains in third place.
The reasons are up for debate. Some might argue that the Xbox 360 used its year head start very effectively while Nintendo attacked a new market of casual gamers, leaving the PS3 out in the cold. Others might argue that the price tag, coupled with Sony’s bewildering approach of “if you want it, work harder and save your money” to the price turned others away. Whatever the cause, the first few years of life have been rocky for the system.
But then in 2010 things began to click. Sony seemed to have learned its lessons, and the price of the PS3 began to drop. More units were sold, and that created more manufacturing which lowered the cost of the parts, which in turn finally dropped the PS3 to a position where each unit sold was netting a profit after three and a half years.
Patience was part of it, but so was finding the right ways to appeal to gamers. As the PSN begins to show a profit, expect Sony to continue to expand the services it offers. The hardware battle will rage on, but the next battlefield is shaping up to be the online services offered to gamers.
Whatever console you own, the success of the PSN is good news. Competition breeds innovation, so as Sony’s profits soar, Microsoft and Nintendo will almost certainly continue to push their online services as well. Regardless of your console of choice, 2011 is already shaping up to be a very interesting one for gamers.
[Updated: As one of our more charming commenters pointed out, the number of 60 million PSN accounts includes both the PS3 and PSP. The article has been updated and the sentence in question removed.]
I only own a Playstation 3 and i think it is great and would recommend it to anyone. However one downside that i dont like is that the PS isnt bundled with a mic… i personally think that the Xbox is propably better for online play because everyone has a mic and you can talk to everyone. But PSN is also loads of fun aswell. however most of my friends do own PS aswell but without the mic its kinda just boring cuz you are playing as if your friend wasnt in the same party as you.
then buy one :)
If they made it easier to take credit cards, maybe they’d be in the red.
Oh great, this is a buffet for anti sony fanboys. But how? Doesn’t make sense.
Lol, theres over 2x as much media for watching or sale on PSN than LIVE.
Xbox might be in the lead of sales slightly, Tho the PS3 has sold more each year compared to the 360 or the gap would be over 20% and not under 10%.
Also, How many consoles are still in peoples homes? Its said upto 50% of 360 have failed and M$ hasnt denied these claims, Even after huge surveys by many reliable websites.
Even if the failure rate was only 30% that still leaves only 31.2 million still working, Compared to PS3 37.4 million after a 10% failure rate.
Then theres online.. Potentially all 37 million PS3 could be online gaming while on Xbox, only roughly 15 million, under 50% have LIVE Gold for online gaming.
I also personaly don't care fot 3d. Its headache inducing.
It looks like 2011 is not going to be the best year for Sony and PSN. The PS3 has officially been compromised by a team named fail0verflow, discovering a private/public key used to sign works, due to a design flaw in their ECDSA implementation. Otherwise known as an "epic fail" by Sony, this has an extremely high potential value of opening up the console to running Linux and community applications, as well as the major side effect of piracy of any console game and unfair play in online gaming.
LOL. It's definitely not an epic fail considering it took them nearly 5 years to "barely scratch the surface". However, Sony already knew this, by all means they are not "dumb". In face, they are geniuses always one step ahead of the game, if not two. The rest of the human population which I call "sheeps" only read and hear about this so called "hack", but I will assure you Sony was already prepared. Just watch what happens next.
Seems like there's some bias towards the PS3 here in this article… They dont stand a snowball's chance in hell at catching up if you ask me.
Owning both consoles, Sony's undoing has been and continues to be twofold:
- Intentionally strong lack of support for PS2 games.
- Weak networking support
Sure, they may be rectifying the online issue. But one simple fact remains – my Xbox 360 plays both Xbox and Xbox 360 games making their library much more extensive to choose from. I own a PS3. Why should I have to buy a PS2?
Knowing Sony actively fights backwards compatibility of their systems, Unless it's an impossible to resist game like Gods Of War – My library of Xbox Games outnumbers my PS3 games 10 to 1. I mean – why support a manufacturer of a system which doesnt support what I have as they move forward?
That what I'm saying, I xan still play NFS underground 2. Freely whith minimal bugs.
Another fraudulent article.
"The Xbox 360 has been airing video clips for years, has a full selection of music and videos to rent and buy, has begun to broadcast ESPN on Xbox Live (and also just announced that it will even be airing most of the Bowl games, including the national championship), and it is even discussing bringing a premium channel online. 1. Sony has been airing video clips since it launched via it's web browser. Your choice instead of the communist style selection of Live.
2. You have more selection on PSN. All 6 major studios. Hulu, Vuudu, Netflix and you can buy HD movies. If your in Europe you have the free Vidzone, iPlayer, ITV, plus Mubi, Lovefilm, Qriocity.
3. You can get MLB.TV and NHL on PSN. Premium channels are already here.
4. 32 player dedicated servers on PSN vs 16 player P2P lag fests like BOTH Gears (10 players) have been on Live
5. Free for everyone.
6. Can store videos on my PS3 or use a media server.
The reason for the sales is because thousands of lying fraudulent articles like yours that lie to people. Like the obvious list above you conveniently left out and slanted to "prove" your M$ funded lies.
More RAM does not mean a faster system it means more data can be stored in a fast access area. Games don't always need 512mb of RAM.
The RSX (PS3 GPU) can freely use as much of the 512MB total RAM that the PS3 has because the Cell doesn't need much RAM because its fast enough. And the fact that the PS3 has XDR means that it has faster access to data files.
Then explain how saints row 2 takes 15 seconds to load on 360 and 35 on ps3. And I'm running it off the disc on the 360.
If you people have no idea about the ps3 architecture please do not write down fictional information.
The Playstation 3 has 256mb of GDDR3 at 700mhz and 256Mb of XDR at 3.2ghz. Total of 512, same as xbox 360 but faster.
XDR makes PS3 super efficient
XDR aids in faster cache mapping, both direct and indirect
XDR ram works by a pointer to pointer technology and needs very small buswidth for execution
XDR is not just faster than GDDR3 but it is much more efficient
XDR RAM works by breaking down data into several packets which prevents data loss and exceptions
Also, the Cell.
Contrary to belief, Sony PS3 does not need much ram because of the unique architecture of this genius asian engineering. Unlike the xbox 360 which is a similar structure as a "regular" pc, Sony computer ps3 system is unlike anything we seen before in history.
Imust have a bootleg ps3, cuz I swear that it takes mine a minimum of 45 seconds to load any game. And if it has so much ram and is so fast, why in the hell I can't play any ps2 games via a built in emulator of some sort? Sony is too might jus be too lazy to make one tho. But ur right tho. Istand corrected. Pc gaming will come back maybe.
